starts around 17:30. In a different interview a few months ago Yamaki said don't expect a foveon L mount camera in 2022.  If it actually ever happens, I'd be first in line.

If you are first in line; I will patiently wait behind you. An L-mount, FF Foveon sensor would be something...

I guess in shame to be third one in line for me.

I think that a Foveon sensor will not be very popular with L-mount photographers who are M lens users as well;  it cannot handle rangefinder lenses very effectively, due to the layered construction of its. sensels. They are too deep to handle steep incidence angles. This  is the issue holding up the development of a full-frame Foveon X3 sensor.

Valid point regarding (most) M lenses. But there are - I assume - plenty of L-mount users with L-mount designed lenses. For the latter, edge effects should not be a stopping factor. But clearly, FF Foveon is still into the blue. Sigma is rather innovative (eg Foveon and fp), so one should never say never.

I love the idea of this happening, and would almost certainly be somewhere in the queue. However, with all its faults (bad AF, low ISO, lousy battery life and a great difficulty in finding SA mount lenses here) the Sigma SD Quattro has become my digital of choice, so I can survive happily should a FF Foveon not come to pass rapidly or even at all.

I have a DP2 Merrill coming next week. My very modest (great ebay price) foray into Foveon land.

thanks so much for this! My sense is that Sigma is the most transparent of all camera companies. Its owner/ceo is quite explicit about where Sigma is on all its products. Unlike another company we know. 😀

You'll get great photos, I had the first DP1 and while the results were great, but I could hardly see a thing on the rear screen, so switched to the SD.

Thanks! Good to know. I'm so very confused by all the model numbers. This is very helpful.

FF Foveon in L mount will complete Sigma's portfolio. The current Sigma L mount cameras are more video focused, it make sense to have a photographic focused camera and offer something unique, more unique than X-Trans. I'd be interested to own a FF Foveon especially in L mount.

I had several Foveon sensor cameras in the past and I still have a Quattro H in EF mount.

Foveon sensors had many drawbacks like green centre/magenta corners which produce poor images even with lenses designed for them.

However, when they work, the colour looks very nice and some may say it's organic while others would say there were a lot internal processing from the camera body.

I’m on the side of “organic”, having once owned a DP2 Merrill! The main reason I sold it was due to the rather clunky issues I encountered with the RAW processing software.

From an image quality perspective from a digital camera, it was the most natural and “least digital” color prints that I’ve ever enjoyed. And when it got the color right, what I saw on screen was (for me) a bit like looking at a large sheet of E6 film on a light table.

In comparison, my eyes see a particular rendering in prints from every Bayer filter camera I’ve used which, to me, doesn’t look quite right for many images ….ie, my eyes detect something that is a bit processed, and it simply tells me “that’s digital”.

The only digital cameras where I’ve found that not be to the case = the DP Merrill and the M Monochroms. Both of which aren’t doing demosaicing interpolation, and they’re arguably recording light in a more similar way to how film does? …. ie, light passing though the lens and more directly right into the sensor?  Whatever it is, I find their output less digital, and more reminiscent of film compared to the color filter array cameras.

As many have seen, Sigma works on a prototype sensor at Stage Two in the development phase of a (possibly) forthcoming FF Foveon sensor: https://www.dpreview.com/news/1885231343/sigma-releases-update-on-the-development-of-its-three-layer-full-frame-foveon-image-sensor.

Thanks for the link to the update, Helged.

I have had a SD-14 with the Sigma lens mount replaced by a Leica R mount for many years and it works exceptionally well with my R lenses and became my 'R10' camera.  Alas it has sat on the shelf since the SL came out but it produced wonderfully 'organic' pictures that I've always found more pleasant than those taken through a Bayer matrix and interpolated/demosaiced.

I would also join the FF-Foveon queue.

Pete.
