Hi,

I have recently sold my M10 and I have a small capital I'd like invest in a new SL camera.

At the moment I see only these options:

- old SL in good conditions

- new SL2-s

The decisive factor for me is color rendition. Of the M10 I really liked the raw files and the color science. The SL comes very very close to the rendition of the M10, I have realised this after going through thousands of pictures and online available raw files.

But...of course the SL2-s is a new camera, it comes with many new improvements and I am tempted to go for it.

As for the colours, I have seen reviews mentioning that the color science in this camera is very similar to the original SL (see review from Steve Huff) and in fact, I have found some SOOC files on the internet confirming somehow this impression, for example here: https://www.thephoblographer.com/2020/12/10/leica-sl2s-review/#jpeg-output

However, I am still a bit unsure, so I decided to ask the forum:

  • what do you think about the SL2-s and the color rendition being close if not similar to the SL?
  • do you know where I can found more SOOC Jpecs / RAW files from this camera?
  • Am I talking nonsense about the color science :) ?

Thank you in advance for comments and advices.

Hi there,

I owned the original SL for sometime and agree the color science on that camera was amazing. Top ergonomics too! I miss the 4 button set up.

I sold it a while later to get the SL2. I love the SL2 but color was a little different. Not bad, just not the same. Also, the low light ability was lacking.

This made me crave the SL2-S. So I picked that up as well and can confirm color is the same if not better than original SL. The files are just straight goegeous. I feel sometimes I dont even have to do any editing. I'm on the same boat as Mr. Huff. Completely satisfied with the SL2-S.

IMO, go for the SL2-S while you have the budget to do so. Any nuances you may have perceived in color can be negated pretty quickly simply by importing into different apps for processing E.g., Capture One vs Lightroom anyway. Or even viewing on different monitors. Not to mention how different lenses can affect color too. Besides you are still in the Leica color echo system with the SL2-S and Leica would have learned a thing or two between the SL, SL2 and now the very latest sensor tech the SL2-S.

Whatever you decide, I wish you the very best on your new camera adventure!

Leica provides a pretty consistent colour experience to their users throughout their products. The SL2-S is no exemption. I find its colour rendition especially shining in lowlight conditions when other Leicas begin to struggle.

Colors aren’t locked in.  One can easily make a custom profile, create or source presets, and/or establish default import settings.  And of course make image specific adjustments.  Color matching current/recent Leica cameras shouldn’t be very difficult.

I can’t speak for the SL but I have both the M10 and SL2-S and I process them pretty much the same way in Lightroom and get the same nice colours for both cameras. The SL2-S is better in low light at high ISO (6400+) compared to the M10 but at ISO 100, I don’t see much difference between the M10 and SL2-S.

I have owned the SL for over a year and now own the SL2-S.

I definetely preferred the original SL in terms of color rendition, no questions.

For me, the video capabilities where the decisive factor, but if photo was my only goal, I would go for for the SL Typ 601 and save same cash.

- Other factors you might want to consider:

- Pixelshift is not needed as of the new Lightroom Super Resolution feature imho.

- IBIS is nice, but for me it is more relevant for video than it is for photo

It depends what you call colour science.........

I owned the SL since launch, the SL2 for 2-3 months last autumn, then swapped it for the SL2-S. Broadly I agree they are all clearly of the same family in terms of colour rendition in normal lighting. In mid to low lighting and high ISO I find the difference from SL to SL2-S like chalk and cheese. At the same high ISO, the SL2-S will have much more realistic colour, of greater depth and saturation, and both less noise and more pleasing noise.

This is a shot from rehearsals of a play last night, taken indoors under fluorescent lighting, with the 90-280 zoom at 280mm. ISO 12500, f/4 1/500s. Auto White Balance in camera, slight adjustment to Red and Orange hue sliders in Lightroom, Noise Reduction 30, Color Noise Reduction 20. To give me the 'look' I was after, Saturation -15, Clarity -15. I am certain I could never have got anywhere near this degree of naturalness at ISO 12500 with the SL2. I would have to lose skin texture to denoising, and even then I would have struggled to get a natural skin colour.

I have some shots at 25000 which show more grain, but mainly because I set the same Noise Reduction across all shots.

And for comparison, the same pose an hour earlier taken under very bright flat flash lighting at ISO 100, 24-90 zoom at 90, f/11. I'm sorry I don't have anything so comparable from the SL at close hand. If this becomes an issue, I'll look back through the archive.

What is the main reason so many people switched from SL2 to SL2-S?

Better ISO performance, smaller files work for 80% of needs, colors out of camera (less post editing), dynamic range at higher ISO.

It often is the Lens that makes the difference...

After Shooting about 2000 Photos with SL and now own the SL2S for about 1000 Photos, shooting with SL-Elmarit 24-70, M-Lux 35 from 1966, M-Lux 50 from 1967 and M-Elmarit 90 from 2006 my conclusion is, that the ergonomic of the SL2S is much better than SL. Dynamic Range is amazing and colors are amazing.

Following some Shots of the last day's (raws with only some Light-Editing out of ligthroom, no color-Editing) all with SL-24-70 except sunset, this was with M-Elmarit 90 with F16).

Astro and SL2S ... I will test this further more this first snapshot ... looks promissing...

This was at Iso 6400, F2,8, 24 mm, 8 seconds. My son has to hold his hand above his head for some time.....😄😉😇

I’ve found ISO 12500 works equally well without too much noise and helps to keep shutter speed down to avoid smearing of stars.

Better at high ISO, better video, no need for so many pixels

Couldn’t agree more and I also found the colours to be more M like and the AF is better and pretty good overall until the SL2 gets its firmware upgrade. I couldn’t have been happier when I swapped my SL2 for one.
