A story about a lens cap

Last Friday I took some lenses and cameras for a photoshoot in Todalen, Norway. There was a lot of changes of lenses. When I got home I missed the lens cap for my 21mm. My. parents have a second home nearby, so I send my father a picture from where I thought I lost the lens cap (the attachment) and a SMS. Today he called to tell me he have found the cap. What are the odds? Very happy now.

My father will forever remind me about this for the rest of our lives. Better if I had shut still about it and bought a new cap.

If anyone is interested here are some pictures I took Friday. First one is with a 50mm Planar ZM on a M10:

A crop from the same picture using Adobe Super Resolution. It is 7km away.

This is good enough for me. But is a modern 400mm from Canon or Nikon any better?

Yes, by a lot. Atmospheric haze can degrade an image over long distances but generally speaking the extender also degrades the image as well and a 400mm lens will perform better than the image from a 180mm lens + extender.

But a good story about your lens cap, glad you got it back. But Leica lenses are tough and if you have a camera bag large enough to have each lens in its own compartment lens caps aren't necessary, just leave them at home.

Or, a different take on Steve's advice, buy the cheap and nasty equivalent, no name pinch caps that fit the filter size of the lens, and keep the genuine arm and a leg Leica ones safe.

When I had an X-Pan, with the three lenses, and unobtainium caps, I stashed them and used cheap 49 and 58mm caps.

These hood caps are easy to lose and expensive to replace. And worse if the lens has been discontinued like the 24mm Summilux you can’t even find a replacement cap with ease. The best thing to do is to leave the caps at home.

I purchased 21 SEM lens cap recently, it doesn't list the specific lens but another lens (I forget which) has the same design and size. $60 for a piece of plastic is a bit steep but glad to have the original Leica one. I can't say the same for the 35 Summicron ASPH cap however, this one is not available anywhere.

I agree Leica lens caps and hoods are expensive, but have you priced a Voigtlander hood? $100+ USD for a Voigtlander vented hood. For once, I find Leica completely tolerable in price.
