Peters Posted May 23, 2021 Share #1  Posted May 23, 2021 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hey guys, just wondering if anyone had heard of any news on the next generation M lenses? There were one or two rumors about them a year or two back. I understand that one of the reasons given for the discontinuation of some M lenses was the lack of consumer interest, but it wouldn't surprise me of they brought them back via updated designs. I sold my 50 ASPH Lux about a year after I bought it. Focusing was far too stiff and jerky, not improved by a visit to Solms and purple fringing on high contrast edges was very noticeable. I much prefer my 1999 Special Edition Summilux III e46. As others have commented, the Special Edition lenses don't seem to have much aperture shift, which was a problem with many 50 Summilux III lenses. There has been a rumour about a 35 Noctilux for years but I am guessing Leica feels they have satisfied the 35mm lens market with the APO. Wilson Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

I own and totally love the images produced by my 28mm f5.6 summaron but also enjoy reading about and looking at images from the the noctilux and thumbar remake So whats next? Why is my post suddenly underlined????? Many of the owners of the earlier 50 ASPH Summilux (me included) complained of very stiff and jerky focussing. This particularly seemed to affect the chrome/brass lenses. My one also had a razor sharp focusing tab, which as I have very fragile skin from many years of high dose arthritis medications, could result in a bleeding finger after a couple hours of use. I sent my 50 ASPH Summilux back for service for this problem, but I did not notice any improvement on its return. This was a 2006 model, one of the first made with 6 bit coding. I don't know if later chrome ones were better. In comparison, my 1999 chrome/brass 50mm Summilux III special edition is silky smooth to focus. That lens does not have a focus tab, so I have added a TAAB rubber focus ring with a tab on it. https://www.lenstab.com I also noticed that the early 35 FLE Summilux I borrowed, was very stiff to focus, so I don't know if the stiff focusing is a consequence of having to move the FLE elements inside the barrel. I therefore decided to stick with my existing chrome/brass 35 ASPH Summilux, especially as I had taken such pains to find a really good example, with minimal focus shift. Wilson Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

My 2007 chrome example was turned into a very smooth lens by Leica CS when being corrected for a close focus problem in Solms, without me even asking for an adjustment. They had aproblem with the production of mechanical FLE parts at that time, as Weller Feinmechanic, who produces machined parts for Leica, was struggling to meet the extremely narrow tolerances.
