Add about 85 grams for the SL2-S.

EVF is what it is price-wise, not a lot of cameras with external EVFs to compare pricing to.

Leica has been selling the same mediocre resolution 020 Visoflex with buggy GPS chip for nearly a decade at a similar price..

anyway, photos

fpL & 35/2

Alan (sorry can't find how to do the @ thing)

Thanks for posting the size/weight comparisons - I've been swithering re FP vs SL601 as a FF EVF option (for using M lenses for stills when shooting wide/long) having given up the idea that there will ever be an acceptable "native" EVF M option (shutter lag/resolution etc - the purported M11 EVF might improve the 2nd but I'm guessing not the first and will be $$$ inc the new M body).

The problem looks like the FP+EVF option loses a lot of the initial size advantage vs the SL. In use does it feel a lot smaller/lighter than the SL??

It feels much lighter and smaller. I'm surprised to see the sizes looking so similar in the photos.

No way could I carry the SL2 around all day, the FP-L is easy.

The SL2's lack of a tiltable viewfinder is a serious limitation.

I'll keep the SL2 for studio work, but not for much else.

Thanks for the comparison. It puts into perspective how much bulk the evf adds. Imho the evf was an after thought after many user complained the fp lacked, however I think it could of been better implemented. Looks like it throws off the balance.

Perhaps a smaller evf with a pop out tilt swivel of sorts to minimise the bulk?? Not sure why they had to cut the bottom

A little more expensive than the Leica 020 Visoflex - an unusual place for Sigma to come in vis a vis Leica.

Well yes, everything Leica is premium priced, everything Sigma is usually sensibly priced. All the original FP needs is a more elegant way to view focus and settings without the back screen and the bulky un-ergonomic loupe (which I own).

To offer something that performs that simple function priced the same as other good quality digital cameras (£599) is just bad news for me.

Yeah, regarding the EVF and FP - we still haven't seen the firmware update that makes it possible.

Imagine they would design the camera somewhat longer, the LCD somewhat smaller and integrate an EVF in the camera. An EVF is a very small monitor plus a loup, that takes room. Perhaps one with not so many pixels would suffice, but the reviewers arise as a marketing problem then.

Another solution would be a wireless solution. I have a Sony QX1, where my iPhone is the LCD. Via WLAN, that has the advantage of the possibility of shooting from a distance independent of the camera. But the communication is slow and a loupe would be nice.

A wireless EVF would have no touch screen to operate the camera at a distance.

Yesterday the fp_L and I had some time to get to know each other. Shot 220 images during a three mile walk around in my neighborhood. Used one lens for the day - the CV apo-lanthar Asph 35 f2. Put in a fresh battery towards the end - I'd say 200 shots without paying much attention to energy conservation.

@NigelG You'll definitely notice the weight savings with the fp-L. That said, I don't find the SL+ a lens of modest weight to be an unpleasant carry with a good strap. It's a solid and dense brick. The fp with EVF attached has yet to prove itself in terms of durability. I found myself looking down to see how the EVF was handling the bouncing around. It did seem to be fine though occasionally it unclicks and the EVF tilts upwards - not a bad thing, just a new thing.

@cboyThe EVF does add volume, but it is light. In its lightness it doesn't match the weight and secure feel of the fp body, which helps maintain balance. It does not feel as heavy as the hot shoe attachment, though I haven't compared the two. The reason for its body cut is to allow access to the microphone port.

My first impressions with the EVF are quite positive. The resolution is good and the view unmagnified is excellent - bright and natural. Zoom function for focus provides clear  confirmation along with some awareness that you are seeing pixels (I use full screen rather than PIP). I found I didn't need focus peaking which I had used almost all the time on the SL and original fp - left it off most of the day.

Need to spend more time with the pictures - will share in a bit.

Before my walk, wisteria in the backyard. Full size crops included. There is something about the color from this sensor. I used a helicoid M-L adapter for close focus. Click on the crops to get a sense of the resolution of this lens/sensor combination.

A quick look at corners gives me hope that my Leica M lenses will partner well with this camera.

Don't try this with National Geographic... but for a chance encounter, 5x crop mode with a 35mm focal length...

Well I was waiting for the EVF-11, but in the end picked up the LVF-11 yes is bulky but once you look through it you don't really care it's so nice and bright and big. Reminds me of another camera I have that is horrible to carry around but once you put it to your eyes it works great the Linhof 220 6x7 rf. It's a vertical 6x7 camera with a Rollie pistol grip mounted on the bottom you cannot remove. Here's a link so you can see the beast.

I bought the LVF-11 as well and agree... it is beautiful to look through. I didn't wind up using it often, but maybe I will go back and re-experience it with the original fp. Thanks for the video of the Linhof. Awesome! It's been a long time - I don't remember being able load 120 film in the daylight. ;^)

And as you might have guessed it was called the 220 because it was one of the first cameras that came out that could use 220 film or 120 and you could buy inserts to have preloaded to just pop them into the camera for quick reloads. It was supposed to be a popular wedding camera in Europe

Right now I just leave my LVF-11 on my fp to make sure I get used to using it, on the other end I have a Chinese  7 Artisans 75mm f 1.25 M lens sitting on the camera

I bought a replacement camera and EVF package. The EVF works fine with my original camera. I will never remove it again! I will be contacting technical support at Sigma tomorrow and sending the EVF to be repaired. When it returns, I will put the unused camera and EVF on eBay (unless someone here would be interested). It will be a bit of a financial loss, but I do like this camera and am planning to take it on a trip to Lithuania on 31 May.

I verified that the FP-L does not receive codes through the Leica M to L adapter. I took some test photos with my 50 APO-summicron and found them quite out of focus. I did not, however have the chance to try this in depth. I will try again.

Thanks. I don't know why a lack of communication would affect focus. I've used M and R lenses aplenty with cameras that did not communicate with the cameras, and the focus was determined by my focusing through the EVF or liveview. Am I missing something about this camera?
