cheekz4dayz Posted May 11, 2021 Share #1 Posted May 11, 2021 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi Folks, How do y'all carry the 90-280? Like what strap do you use if you wear your cameras cross body? I recently bought this lens (it's still on the way) and I'm a bit nervous it might be too heavy for me 😅 so I'm curious how those that use the lens frequently carry it while mounted to the sl on a photo walk. Full disclosure: this will be my first time ever using a telephoto lens, so if you have any general tips to use this please feel free to post them 😉. For context I shoot a bit of everything except wildlife so far: landscape, street, travel, food, etc For my sl system I use the dsptch straps but after 2-3 hours with the summicron-sl primes they start digging into my neck so I was trying to find a better system? Another strap I was considering are the monarch straps but I'm not sure if they're strong enough for the sl system either?
Advertisement Posted May 11, 2021 Posted May 11, 2021 Hi cheekz4dayz, Take a look here Camera strap for SL System especially 90-280mm lens. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Jeff S Posted May 11, 2021 Share #2 Posted May 11, 2021 (edited) I use the Peak Design Leash (some prefer the wider PD Slide Lite or Slide) with my SL2, with one end attached to a top lug and the other to the small bottom plate (supplied with the strap) so that the big lens hangs down at the hip rather than sticking out. The easy to adjust length, quick release connectors, and pliable material make the PD strap work for me. I use the Really Right Stuff QD-system on all long(er) lenses: https://www.reallyrightstuff.com/QD-Strap-Plate. Not a comfy shoulder sling, but it can be trusted, with the full weight on the lens foot. Actually, I have two of these, one on each side of the body; keeping two body+lens systems ready for action. Not in a city, clearly, but for e.g. wild life shooting. Edited May 11, 2021 by helged 2

MRP Posted May 11, 2021 Share #6 Posted May 11, 2021 I use the 60mm Eddycam (https://eddycam.com/eddycam-60-mm/), first on my SL, now M10-R. Best Reinhard

RoySmith Posted May 12, 2021 Share #10 Posted May 12, 2021 (edited) Connecting the strap to the lens foot/plate makes sense with a heavy lens - it will lessen stress on the camera mount. The SL 90-280 lens is almost twice the weight of a SL2 body. Edited May 12, 2021 by RoySmith

Mainly use Zeiss ZM lenses but occasionally the 24-90. Would the Lite model be ok? Thanks. Edited August 3, 2021 by Big John

Others might prefer the using the wider Slide strap, but for me the Slide does the job. Body types vary, carrying techniques vary, as do required carry durations and conditions. A reputable dealer will provide returns, and the price is modest enough to have multiple versions IMO, possibly including the small leash. The beauty of the system is that swapping straps is a breeze with the anchor system. Jeff

I tried both the Slide Lite and the Leash and found the Slide Lite rather annoying in that it seems to get twisted up more easily when I have the strap going across my body. The buckles also dig into my back if the strap is twisted which gets annoying. Strangely, I didn’t have the same issue with the Leash getting twisted. 1

It works well even with the big zoom. Jeff
Big John Posted August 4, 2021 Share #16 Posted August 4, 2021 I was assuming I needed the Slide for the SL as it is marketed as suitable for full frame, large cameras - interesting to see that the narrowest strap (leash) works ok. Thanks.
hansvons Posted August 4, 2021 Share #17 Posted August 4, 2021 I use the Slide on the SL2-S with the 24-90. When on a hike or longer walk, the wider Slide provides more comfort. There's a reason why Peak Design offers a strap such wide. Think of it as 100% padding along the whole strap. Even the parts that never touch your shoulder make the whole thing more stable and prevents it von dangling and twisting around. I think it's the best strap available when the function is the task. On the look side, one can come to other conclusions.

As I noted, personal preferences vary by carrying technique, body type, carrying duration, etc. Some, I wrote, will prefer wider straps. At these modest price points, and with dealer return policies, it should be relatively simple for users to experiment and draw their own conclusions. lucy63 Posted August 4, 2021 Share #20 Posted August 4, 2021 I use the Peak design wider slide to carry the SL2s and SL lens. It's attached to one side and the base of the camera so that it hangs down protecting the rather long lens from being knocked, it's incredibly comfortable and I don't notice the weight.
