Advertisement Posted April 21, 2021 Posted April 21, 2021 Hi steve kessel, Take a look here Elmar M 50mm f/2.8. Distinctive, appealing character or just a lightweight?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!

Stein K S Posted April 22, 2021 Share #4  Posted April 22, 2021 Well, I have this lens (along with 2 other 50s and a few other focal lengths). And while I have never really bonded to the drawing of this lens, I will for sure also always keep it! Size is also of course part of the picture... (the lens is one of my most used travel lenses). And handling is both charming and also fast with its short focus throw. Concerning drawing, I am rather ¨split¨. The lens is more than sharp enough... and a lot of times with the really nice ¨soft¨ sharpness that I like with most of my other Leica lenses also. But under certain (lower) light conditions I can also find the lens to be ¨colourless¨ and ¨dull¨. And the weakest point of the lens in my eyes; the bizzi bokeh when background provokes it.  But all in all; a keeper for more than one reason 🙂
UliWer Posted April 23, 2021 Share #5  Posted April 23, 2021 My answer to the thread's title would be: Look at the people you took photos of: they are appealing. It's a lenses job to show this, not to appear as if the glass had "character". 1
andym91 Posted April 23, 2021 Share #6 Â Posted April 23, 2021 Its a lens that's better than most of us combined. I guarantee you that on film or digital you wouldn't be able to tell the diffrence between the Elmar and a Cron. Andy 1
lct Posted April 23, 2021 Share #7  Posted April 23, 2021 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) My favorite 50 in good light. High contrast and acutance with no harshness and less softness at edges and corners than expected from a triplet design. Little flare, CA and distortion, smooth bokeh, gorgeous (or ugly) bokeh balls depending upon tastes. (Elmar-M 50/2.8 on Sony A7r2 mod) Welcome, dear visitor! Infantasy Posted April 24, 2021 Share #8  Posted April 24, 2021 I have the former version of Elmar 50 f/3.5 with the same appearance of f/2.8. It is very compact and with lower contrast comparing with my E43. I mainly use it for street snapshot. I got it at lower price as the glass condition is not good but its performance is not obviously affected. The flare is very low even I pointing direct to the sun but the color is not rich as it was born in the B/W era. For me, I would not spend too much on this very old lenses in view of the age and resale value but it is still worth to have one if you find it in low price.

pedaes Posted April 24, 2021 Share #10  Posted April 24, 2021 This lens is no lightweight - metaphorically or literally in the brass chrome version. In the late Erwin Puts  excellent 2016 book "Leica Lens Saga" covering the development of 50mm lenses,  he says on pg 368  "Production ( of the Elmar-M) did end in 2007 with a special last edition" Does anyone know if such an edition does in fact exist? My later one is from 2005 with 6-bit coding. Never heard of a special last edition but i may be wrong.

The original version of this lens, and the later 2.8 version are completely different from the Elmar M. The 50/2.8 Elmar M is a modern design dating from 1995. I think the one you are talking about is the original version?
Stein K S Posted April 25, 2021 Share #14  Posted April 25, 2021 (edited) Hi There is only one Elmar-M 50... with the -M... and it is this one or?  However, there is the M6 anniversary version which could be misinterpreted as a last edition maybe? Welcome, dear visitor! Became afterwards a regular lens w/o the focus knob of the M6J's though. Welcome, dear visitor!
