if it’s to reflect the relationship of human and building, then some vignetting could be a good feature.

if it’s showing a building surrounded by sky and landscape, again, it ‘s fine

if showing a section of building, then the vignetting’s better corrected.

the real challenge is the corner softness.  No way to ‘correct’, unless cropped but need to be considered when shooting. And it’s not a 28mm anymore, so quite limited.

I heard distortion is none which make it superb for architecture photographing.

“

Sure on 1 and 2.

I think it would be difficult to correct vignetting. I’ve tried REPLICATING its vignetting with lightroom and can never get it right. Lightroom’s simulations are not quite the same as the lens. Also if you crop, you’ll have asymmetric vignetting.

Yup, corners are soft. Not only soft, but smeared.

Don’t know about the distortion, but certainly nothing obvious or that bothers me.

I LOVE the results, but I’d categorize them firmly as artistic as opposed to accurate.

I bought one from red dot cameras[ uk] ,good price compared to other uk dealers.

Took a picture of my oldest grand daughter at a local park which was very sharp and had beautiful rendition.

Not tried it on landscapes yet but its a great feeling using such a tiny/beautifully constructed but very capable lens.

I actually think the classic remake strategy is an inspired move by leica which will make them a lot of money.

I use my 28 Summaron a lot for architectural, building and human action, don't think I have issues after some Lightroom tweaks

In fairness I must say normally I use it mainly to describe my own recent behaviour...

Yes, if you shoot a white wall, the vignette is obvious. But for normal shots it's not at all a problem and for street photography it is perfect with a zone focus. I encourage you to test it versus a modern digital lens and you will see that it is much better than you would expect for it's size and age.

Once I put it on my camera, it makes me smile, and often my subjects smile too. I do not use the nice but relatively large lens shade as I normally don't use shades anyway, and this does have modern coatings and the lens is very recessed anyway.  The camera with this lens is now an admittedly expensive but unique point and shoot. It finally fits in a pocket for real. Yeah, so does an iPhone, but an iPhone is just not a pleasure to use. No I don't have a regular 28mm, but so far, I don't need one. Thanks to Gary for telling me to get this gem.

I love the summaron but its got me in to photographing people with a 28mm lens [my grand kids] ,trouble is i sometimes run out of light so now i am thinking of a faster alternative 28mm!! for those low light woodland walks etc.

I always struggled with the 28mm before the summaron but now i am 28mm man! life is weird.

How much was the summilux again?

Unless you walk in the woods at night the Summaron is very usable. I'm sure the Summilux is very nice and indeed there are some very nice phots in its thread, but IMO when it's dark, use it (the dark I mean), instead of wanting to turn night into day.

mmm, I didn't express that very well... not very well at all really :)

I should have used the "shadows".... but it's no slouch at dusk for example. I much rather have a dark-ish photo which shows the low light as it was than a much brighter photo taken with a Summilux. That's what I meant with turning night into day.

M9 and Summaron at dusk. (the high ISO hunters and Summilixians are going to have a fit!! :) )

Well i was out with 2 of my grand children on the coast in somerset after sunset on a cloudy day  and they started messing about in the water, but i only had my summaron with me.

As it happened i set the iso to 3200 and got some lovely pics.

It just got me thinking that maybe say the  voigtlander 28mm ultron or something might be a good companion/ alternative 28mm but as the results where very nice and all shot wide open at f5.6 as well as having that signature look that the summaron produces perhaps the high iso is no big deal when conditions apply.

Thinking about it if i had the summilux at shot at say F2 at iso 800 i would not have had the depth of field i needed with two kids playing in the water.

Love this lens on my Monochrom, and I actually like the lens hood.  The retro look is rather cool.  Not very practicable, though.

I think the hood makes the lens more authentic because it is very similar to the original hood,i dont use it myself.

Anybody know who designed the original 28mm summaron?

Not mandler i suppose although he was on the company payroll at the time?

Would the elmarit 28mm V3 be a good faster compliment to my summaron?  i mean it might fit in with my summaron reissue, voigtlander 40mm f1.4 and 90mm f2.8 elmarit?

All opinions welcome,even mocking ones.

I do enjoy all the history stuff and though i own the nokton 21mm asph i mostly seem to prefer older designs or modern versions of older designs especially for my main project of recording my grand kids lives.
