Ah!

Thank you, Arnaud, for that info! I did think there was a stamp somewhere and did see the faint ink-stamps but couldn't work out what they meant!

I'll be interested to have a look later!

Philip.

Sorry Andy, but no it doesn't. Its a self-declaration by the maker about the product: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CE_marking

OK, it may be a self-declaration (so actually worthless), but it is supposed to tell the purchaser that the goods have been made to EEA standards.

The CE marking is also found on products sold outside the EEA that have been manufactured to EEA standards. This makes the CE marking recognizable worldwide even to people who are not familiar with the European Economic Area.

Indeed, it is (both). Who is policing it? But of course, in a world where everybody obeys the rules we can be confident about its validity.

Probably only 'policed' through incident, ie everything's assumed to be tickety-boo until a toddler gets zapped by something that's CE-marked and its provenance is only then scrutinised by the HSE and HMP when determining whether charges should be brought against the seller, supplier, and manufacturer.

Other than that there *might* be random checks by Trading Standards but I think it unlikely without a tip-off.

Pete.

on those Leica 14464 batteries, the date of manufactoring is stamped at one place, as WWYY X (week number in two digits followed by year in two digits, plus one letter),

I have one as 5112P ( almost last week of 2012 😉),

I have 2911P, 1014P and 0320P so the last one is Jan 2020!

These are my four M8 batteries, purchased for my M8.2, probably around 2008.  Any clues as to which (if any) are likely genuine, and which are likely aftermarket?

Follow-up question - as a battery is reaching the end of its useful life, is the only obvious change that the battery runs out of power sooner, or can it cause other issues in the captured images?

......and since I'm asking, are genuine replacement batteries still available?

• Genuine batteries at the right hand i would say, left hand being third party's.
• Old batteries run out of power sooner with no issue i'm aware of in the captured images.
• No genuine battery is available IMHO but i would ask Leica to be sure.
Beware that third party batteries can cause false charge readings if they are not totally discharged in the camera. Another way of avoiding such false readings could be to press the shutter release button shortly after freshly charged battery is inserted but i have never tried this tip personally.

Genuine Leica batteries are still available from the big retailers like BH and Adorama. I assume that they are NOS, but I've bought some recently and they work just fine.

Are there available genuine batteries really? Just curious.

Thanks for the feedback.  From a full charge, my M8 batteries don't last as long as I remember, but especially with the dead pixels,  I'm not using this camera that much.   I'll send it off to Leica to get the pixels re-mapped, and after that, I'll see.

Every time I take out the M10, I don't want to switch back, and this goes doubly when I see the images in my editor, DxO PhotoLab.

I still only have the two M10 batteries I got along with the camera - I'm likely to buy one more "just in case".  I assume that if I buy from B&H it will be the real thing.

Yes, they are still available from the major retailers (BH, Adorama, etc). I suspect that they may be new old stock, but they are still available. I've purchased a few in the past year and they all work great.
