TheDudeAbides Posted February 6, 2021 Share #1 Posted February 6, 2021 Advertisement (gone after registration) Inspecting my 50 APO this morning and noticed this mark on the aperture blades. I’m not sure if it’s oil, or just wear. Performance and operation seem fine. Is this something to worry about? I’m usually not worried about things like this, but given the value of the 50 APO I just want to be safe! Any advice is much appreciated. Welcome, dear visitor! Fgcm Posted February 6, 2021 Share #2 Posted February 6, 2021 Looks like oil. Forget about it and enjoy your fantastic Summicron.
lct Posted February 6, 2021 Share #3 Posted February 6, 2021 Oil leakage i suspect. Should not be there if the lens is new. I would not worry if you intend to keep the lens but otherwise the new owner could find the price too high. Lawyer's advice FWIW: Return the lens if it is under warranty.
colint544 Posted February 6, 2021 Share #4 Posted February 6, 2021 Warm conditions, and keeping a lens stored on its side, apparently, can exacerbate oil on the blades. I wouldn't have thought it could happen on such a recent lens as yours, though. But it really shouldn't make any difference to your pictures.

Just looked at mine and I have a similar small stain on several of my blades. I would suspect it is quite common. Wyck Posted February 6, 2021 Share #6 Posted February 6, 2021 I also have a similar stain / mark in the same place as the OP. As a side note my lens went back to Wetzlar for other work and they didn’t mention the mark at all in their report.
TheDudeAbides Posted February 7, 2021 Author Share #7 Posted February 7, 2021 Advertisement (gone after registration) Thanks everyone for weighing in. Sounds like not a big deal, but could impact resale value. I did purchase it second-hand through Popflash Photo last year so I can't speak to how it was handled before, but it does appear to be in otherwise perfect condition. I don't recall the marks at that time, but it's possible I missed it in my excitement to start using it. It's my daily rider lens, so I'll just keep on shooting! earleygallery Posted February 7, 2021 Share #8 Posted February 7, 2021 I had oil on the blades of my Summicron. I was advised to store it with the aperture open which I did, and it disappeared.
