I've been heavily researching this lens because I'm interested in acquiring one to use on my MP and M10-R, and am trying to understand the nuances of its characteristics. Aside from the beloved bokeh rendering, is the overall image (even the in-focus areas) a touch soft? I know that vintage lenses won't render nearly as sharp as modern lenses, but none off these images have jumped out at me as "sharp" - though they do look unique!

Yes it is sharp, not the sole reason we get this lens of course, but you have to get familiar with it’s quirks (all part of the fun of course). Took me a bit of time to get used to the lens in every day use, shooting into/ against the light and how to take best advantage of the “exposure triangle” and available light to get best sharp (and for that matter contrast) results though. Worth it of course.

It's sharp.  The colors are very nice as is the abrupt fall off.  The issue for me is lack of contrast - which limits landscape use for me...

At the time it came out the v4 was praised for its sharpness, contrast and flare-resistance, three things the earlier Summicrons lacked. I love my v4 because of its neutral colors and the classic sharpness/contrast, especially on my M10R. On film, I tend to prefer my 35 FLE. At the moment the v4 is way overpriced due to reputation and if you want a classic look, you are better off with the Voigtländer 35 Ultron ii, which - as a bonus - has a nicer bo-keh than the King. The time that we spoke about Voigtländer in the sense: ‘at the end you want a Leica anyway’ is over.

...but large possibility in post as usual with medium contrast pictures :) ...Just ramp up contrast and you get a crisp full-colour image without blowing highlights

mmh...this lens is a bit soft at f2, very good at f2.8 , almost crisp from f4 to f11. It's not a modern lens designed by Peter Karbe but it works very good with M10R and can register sharply  'til the last pixel with good exposure and right aperture. As you noted, it is not as contrasty as newer lenses; this moderate contrast generates images with detailed shadows and highlights. Maybe it's my sample that is very good (a silver one) or it could be the absence of filter in front of it but I haven't noticed any clogged shadow.Did you try it with well controlled light and right exposure? Too much underexposure in order to save highlights could lose shadows but I think you already know about it.

This is what I mean.... In pictures where there are subtle variations in contrast... More modern lenses perform better.  Below is not a great photo - but to illustrate a point - the 35mm fle brings out variations in contrast in the leaves of this tree that would be mud with the 35mm con v4.  I love the cron v4.  I just tend to use it where color is the dominant them and / or with portraits.

Below shot with 35mm fle on m10r
