Sigma 85mm 1.4 for L mount. Stunning piece of glass. Get the new version not the older larger one.

Gives up almost nothing to the SL glass and is native so you get normal AF etc.

Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG DN Art Lens for Leica L 322969 B&H Photo (bhphotovideo.com)

My next lens, unless I cave and buy the 24 3.5 first.

Although maybe I should get the 24-70 2.8 and then the 85 1.4. Sell the 45, and I’d be lens complete.

If F2.0 is enough, I highly recommend you to take a look at the new Sigma 65mm F2.0 DG DN that was recently released. I bought it this week as an AF portrait lens option for my SL next to my M primes and I’m really, really impressed with it.

I tend to like to shoot narrow depth-of-field stationary subjects, and for that the new Sigma 85 f1.4 DG DN is stellar, but I have found the colors to be a bit muted when compared with the Summilux-SL 50 1.4. I've also tried the Sigma 35 f1.2 DG DN, which is a very nice lens but comes in at about the same weight as the Summilux. For my  purposes on the wide angle side  I finally went with the older Sigma 28 f1.4 DG HSM because it fit better into the range of focal lengths of lenses that I already owned, and had a decent mtf curve as well. So far I've been pretty happy with it. I tend to shoot primes with the SL2, and own a Leica R 19mm 2.8 for wide angle, Sigma 28 for medium wide, Summilux-SL 50 for standard, and Sigma 85 for short telephoto. This set of focal lengths lets me roughly crop down to 24, 35, and 75 with a reasonable pixel count to approximate the lenses that I don't own. Although I have limited experience with all these lenses,  I have to say the overall value represented by the Sigma lenses is surprisingly good.

FWIW – the following are all manual focus (I have and use all of them):

* Leica Summilux-R 80mm f/1.4. (Use it at f/2 to keep the "Mandlerisms" under control)

* Nikkor 105mm F/2.5 AIS. (Famous lens - it was the type used for the NGM "Afghan Girl" cover photo in June 1985 https://cameraville.co/blog/afghan-girl-the-nikon-fm2)

* Leica Tele-Elmar-M 135mm f/4. (Great at f/4 and good for head & shoulders without being in the subject's face)

Get the Leica M→L lens mount adapter for the SL to mount all three. Of course the R and Nikkor also need separate adapters (R→M, F→M).  Works well for me 😃

Hi @FlashGordonPhotography thanks Gordon for sharing the link to B&H so there no confusion which version that is. I’m never a nah-sayer but I suppose you get what you’ve paid for. The lens may make nice bokeh and isolate well when fully open but it all depends. I’ve gone through all the reviews and comments and even this picture shared by a reviewer, attached here.

Have you seen what the Leica Summicron 90 looks like without auto corrections? :)

The 85 Sigma does need a proper profile, I agree.
