50mm for me, f1.4.

A month is a long time, if a compelling subject presented itself I might turn the aperture ring.  .

🤣 You can't resists... This is the point. No matter what, don't cheat. And you're right, one month it's a long time.

But the super take-away point for me here it is to master distances, zone focus, pre-visualize certain DOP at different distances, using the same f/stop. I assure you that after a few days shooting just for fun, plus a few hours I dedicated on Friday shooting a project, I learned a lot.

I really believe that to master MF on RF is essential. You can have better results, and more speed.

I would take the 50 APO Summicron and shoot it at f4.0.

Because I like 50mm as a flexible focal length for portraits at smaller distances, and because I would prefer f4.0 over 2.0 to get a little more DOF, but still concentration on the subject.

I agree. f/4 on a 50mm it could be the perfect commitment. Still a little decent shallow DOP from closer distances, and more context and longer distances

...and what is DOP?
Do you mean DoF, depth of field ?

Yes. I didn't know was better to write it DoP. 🤷‍♂️

5cm Summicron collapsible @ f/8

50mm af f/8, a peculiar choice ...

Peculiar? How so?
Ilford FP4+ rated at box speed, outdoors in the early morning or late in the afternoon...

keep in mind, I’m in the western Sierra Nevada foothills of California - usually, there is plenty of light!

I’d say f/8 is very practical. Maybe,  f5.6 if the light is failing.

...and it’s depth of field...with an f not a p.  DOF not DOP.

I say peculiar because it's a 50mm...  But it totally makes sense.

I would prefer to use f/8 with a 35 and maybe f/5.6 with a 50mm. But I repeat, it's me. That why I enjoy reading the posts in this thread, everyone has a different reason 🙂

Many prefer 35 pre-aspherical, specially at f1.4 ... It must mean something ... 🤔

It does! At f1.4 the images are incredible. Not too soft but with a lovely texture.

This was taken on my M-P 240, with the 35 Lux (v2, but with infinity lock, which makes it quite rare) almost wide open...

Lovely picture, and texture!

Let us just keep in mind that with this lens "almost wide open" often makes a huge difference from "completely wide open" .

Thanks. When I say almost wide open, I had accidentally moved the aperture tab about 1 mm from fully open. There's a half stop click between f1.4 and f2 and it wasn't even close to that. Exif data says f1.7.

Here's a photo that was wide open at f1.4, again on the M-P 240...

My combination would be M10-R + 35 Cron Asph @f/4

35mm because, for me, it is the best FL for M cameras 0.72x. Or like a 50mm for an M3 ... It's my best fit. I think 35mm is an incredibly versatile lens, capable of shooting from portraits to landscapes, passing from street photography, and finally for documentary purposes. When it's about to tell a story, my to-go lens is a 35mm.

Why the aperture? Because I guess it's a perfect commitment. F/4 at 70cm, I can have a fantastic kind-of-shallow DoP. (see picture below)

Medium distances, it still gives me separation (in pursuit of a 3d-pop effect). While focusing at large distances (15mt, for example), on a 35mm, f/4 can reach infinity.

@pippy above the reason why, as you asked. Your choice is f/4.5, similar reasons? Or being a 40mm is another world? Never used, I just can imagine
