Of course, it would have to be a Summilux, 50mm, f 1.4. It's my lens and my aperture. Bokeh lover and DOF passionate...

Awesome.

My 50 is a Summicron, so I can just imaging what a 50Lux could do wide open.

Bokeh passionate and DoF lover 🙂

why so? It's a peculiar f/stop

Dennis, because you can still have a good out of focus area, but also a moderate DOF.  But only If I had to choose JUST one. That's because I prefer to shoot with my lenses quite open. Beside, with 2.5 you still shoot landscape.

It makes sense. My next month it will be my f/2 month, the second last challenge. I'm excited because while you can imagine or predict the OoF areas of the DoF, I will tsruggle i guess to put context in the frame, f/2 is very limitative. I love and often practice layering, I like more "3d" photos. I guess at f/2 I need to start to shoot more perpendicular to the subjects line to have most of my f/2 DOF 🤔   We'll see

And your f/2.5 it's half stop better than f/2 ...

I always see more Italiani here 🙂 I just saw your are form Torino. Beautiful city. I'm from Livorno, born in Italy and living in Mexico since 2005. Once I will travel in Italy next time, and when allowed and safe, I would love to meet some new Leica fellows and speak with my Hispataliano accent. Do you often gathering, besides the annual meetings?

Think half a stop different and not better.

totally agree. Maybe better because I want more context and DoF to tell a story, and for this, f/2.5 it's slightly better than f/2 😬 But different

silly question but I'll bite

the question could actually be, what's your favourite aperture ?

but that depends

If I could only have one, it would be f2.8 below 50mm as plenty DOF but low light

50mm and over would be f4. Some good thin DOF close range when needed, but good enough at infinity for some detail

rgds

I accept every challenge if it is a challenging one.  Just replacing the Nikon with an M, but same same...

In turn, Al, I wish you good luck hauling the 500mm around as your only lens for a month!

The post you quoted (#84) regarding the Nikkor, however, was written by KTMrider; not myself.

As far as the small patch which is sharp at f1.5 with the Summarit is concerned I haven't yet had much chance to explore the abilities / limitations of the lens but I rather like the very first (non studio-test) shot I took with it. The snap (and it is just a snap) was taken on a very bleak, dark wet late-afternoon and it does, indeed, show a very small area which is sharp. It has been posted in the 'view through older glass' thread but, for the sake of convenience, I'll post it here once more just for fun;

Favourite, as concept, any apertures in special. The most used? Maybe f/4, to add more context to the photos. The most fun? f/2

My trinity f/stops that I use 95% of the times are only these numbers: f/2 - f/4 - f/8 ...

OK; today, when my daughter was sledging, I had around 30 mins or so to play with the 50mm f1.5 Summarit at max. aperture trying to get to know it a bit better at different distances / focus-planes. The snow-cover might have been an issue shooting at f1.5 during the day but I took these snaps as the day was turning from late-afternoon gloom to dusk.

A couple images will follow. Neither are 'Competition Winners' but I learned a lot!

First subject-matter around 7m distance. As Al Brown predicted (post #132) the actual area of sharpness - even on a flat-plane - is not that generous!

Second snap as per previous pic. Tree (point of focus) was around 7m away; transmitter mast perhaps 200m?

I must say I do like the way this lens paints a picture. I did shoot some identical images at smaller apertures for purposes of comparison (Sorry Dennis!) because the lens is so very new to me and I do have to take each opportunity which comes my way to learn how it renders but my favourite pictorial images from today were always the ones shot at f1.5. Very interesting lens to be sure.

Philip.

EDIT : Camera was M Monochrom set to ISO 320 and the Summarit sported a Leitz Yellow filter for both images.

As an afterthought here is something almost the opposite of the previous snap to show different rendering in different circ's. Focus on Mast; rest left to drift oof. All else as before. By this stage it was actually very gloomy and it was snowing quite noticeably...

Thanks for sharing. In order, I like 2nd, 3rd and 1st.

The 2nd and 3rd have some kind of magic, like an old glass  🙂 Interesting. Specially due to the hard shooting conditions. How was the lens a different apertures? I forgive you 😂

Once you have chance, sometimes this year, it would be great if you can share a picture, wide open and at f/8, exposing for the highlights or similar. (1/4,000 100ISO it's your best chance on M haha). An exposure such as Alex Webb, with harsh light, deep shadow. I'm curious to see how peculiar it performs with strong contrast.

By the way, I like this wide open month (f/2 for me).

For me it would be f 64.

In fact i might start a group with like minded photographers and call it the f 64 group.

Just need leica to produce a lens with that aperture.

Wow f/64 ... Why so. It's an interesting answer. Do you just want maximum DoF? It would be tempting with no diffraction, right? Maybe the Leica S3 can perform decently well at such apertures ....

If I shoot at f/8 w/ a 21 or 35, can I join your group? 🤔
