I agree with everything you suggest except the last point about discontinuing the MA.  MA and MP are 99% the same camera and I suspect there would be negligible cost saving to discontinue the MA.  The only effect would be to make the MA a collectible item and therefore less accessible for people who like the simplicity of a meter-less camera.

In my humble opinion it makes not much sense to keep the M-A in production when a cheaper M-model would appear.

Agree, Andrew.  At least don't discontinue the MA until after I get a used one, and then the collectibility pricing can kick in.  I've never used an MA but the descriptions in this forum sound wonderful, although I think it would get serious competition from my M3 and 28mm external viewfinder.

The MA is wonderful, I highly recommend it  I have an M4 too  (and an external 28mm viewfinder) but I tend to use my MA more frequently.  Hoping to add an M3 soon and then I'm "done"  😋

I don't think the attractiveness or otherwise of the M-A hinges on it being a few quid cheaper than the MP.

I am happy to see this.....this means that Film is alive and well....and people are into it....great. Analog is not gone!!!!  Regardless of cost, make-up, just Leica or perhaps other brands will follow?....who cares....great news!!!!!

Of course I meant M-A, not MA. I followed @RayD28's lead and omitted the '-' 😉 Leica and their convoluted nomenclature...

...I also often wonder about the leica zinc top plate...surely, this is also an alloy, not pure zinc ?

It pretty much has to be. Elemental Zinc is brittle by nature and would not be a suitable material for 'hardware'.

And, yes, Magnesium is a highly combustible element so is never used in its pure form for any 'domestic' constructional purposes. Even as an alloy it can still be extremely dangerous. Google 'Le Mans 1955 Disaster' for a fairly grotesque example. Actually; please don't. It's not a nice read.

Philip.

I think basically every metal used in camera body construction is an alloy. Typically the pure metals are either more reactive or have undesirable characteristics when unalloyed. Steel, brass etc, all alloys. I guess maybe only the super rare Titanium M's might be a pure metal...but even then, they might be a Ti alloy. Perhaps someone who knows more will chime in. I studied chemistry, but a million years ago, and not metallurgy.

A lot of the confusion comes around because many people confuse alloy with aluminium - present company excluded. You are right in that native elements are very rare. Titanium is also alloyed with aluminium and vanadium. The proportions are varied to enhance different characteristic (for example strength vs material that can be "worked"). Even "Gold" is sold as alloy. Think 9 ct, 18 ct etc.

So it has to be cheap, but not like the summarit range.  It has to be traditional, but with automatic shutter-speed.  It should not undermine the high standing of M-A and MP.  I continue to think something like this could be the solution: a fully modernised Leica analogue camera, but without the rangefinder-viewfinder integration.  This model has not advanced for the last half century or more, so it's ripe for auto exposure, some new materials, etc.

I rather see a coupled rangefinder,   manual & aperture priority M style camera with a high quality fixed lens than something like that.

Logan, you should never rely on the names I call any Leica equipment.  Someday I'll get it sorted out but that may take years. 🙁

Fairly clear to see from the used prices that all Leica need to do is make something like the M7 again and they would make a killing. People are willing to pay £2300 upwards for a used M7 and probably £2000 upwards for an M6 that they are not sure how long it will last, I for one am looking at an M6 or M7 to go with my M4 but for the cost of them I think I'd either continue saving for an M-A/P or immediately jump on a newly released camera of similar nature dealing this year. I'm sure there would be huge demand for a new camera (relatively speaking).

I would imagine any new camera would be £3000-£3500 in price.
