Many M lenses cannot keep up with the higher resolution sensors

funny comment..but to each his own.

I had been an active Leica user, in years past, shooting with the M6 and SL2 but never bought a digital Leica because of greater value and specifications elsewhere. I have been using the Fuji system for the past 8 years and currently am happy with the XPro-2 and XPro-3. I had hoped that the SL2-S  might be my first digital Leica but I think the camera is overpriced and under spec'd. It should retail for $1000 to $1200 less. I would pull the trigger gladly at that price point.

Maybe Leica S5 based on Panasonic S5 indulges in a lower price that is sensible for us.  With Asian cameras at $2,500 having more features than any Leica… a body sold at $3,500 make sense.  Leica's color science still exceeds that of others.  Nikon is nearly as good though I prefer Leica's.

Not opinion but truth… Leicia's color science is better, as is Nikon's, than that of other makers.  Why better?  Why not just an opinion?

I use the terms "likely" and "apparently" below since I know these are technically valid ways to accomplish extending the ISO range of sensors but there is no way to know for sure which of them or what other methods the camera companies are using.

Look at camera's output from the same time periods for Leica and say Sony.  Sony has a washed out look to the colors… this is "likely" a trick way to let in more light by having a lighter colored filter array on the sensor thus giving 1 to 1.5 stops more light sensitivity to any given sensor.  Also this can be done somewhat in software by adjusting the electrical gain circuits.

But Leica's better color science takes the "hit" of "apparently" using darker color array filters or adjusting the software to allow darker colors thus saturating the color more.  This is normally obvious when looking at the picture samples from each camera yet on the web with the downsizing of files you might sometimes miss it or find it less pronounced.

The Maestro Color Engine makes a more accurate and even more artistic rendition of color than other sensors by giving a more honest range of color from the sensor through the software to the file.  Other makers "more sensitive" sensors may not be more sensitive but instead likely-apparently use a lighter filter array and too much software-hardware-gain to extend the brightness range of the sensor.  This is the short of it...

The long of it… includes using mathematical programs to extend the color range artificially from a small range at the sensor to a longer range in the final file.  Leica does even this apparently in a more honest fashion to give a better color science… not by opinion but by visual and technical appearance because in the end the greater quality can be seen in the greater saturation of colors.

I was but then after renting out I accepted the reality that it is too heavy for 2021. I will end up leaving this at home/hotel room if I take this out. Shame Leica did not bother putting this in a lighter more compact body. That would have been super to use with smaller Sigma lenses and also M lenses.

One hopes Leica will pass its magic wand over the smaller Panasonic S5 (itself a breakthrough camera) giving us a smaller lighter version of the larger Panasonic-S1/Leica-SL2 bodies.

The SL2-S is fine for professionals and prosumers who frequently use tripods and it certainly is hand holdable.

The Leica S5 at $3,500 would be a viable do-it-all "everyman's" camera though slightly expensive for that market.  But would it not be almost stupid to buy a $2,500 feature laden pacific rim camera when $1,000 more gets you into Leica's more artistic color science, sharpest lenses, and backward compatibility to 90 years of lens history?  Hypothetically, It would be well worth the $1,000.  Leica could add a couple of "kit" zoom lenses at lower prices and the wedding photographers could make the switch.

Adding an "auto focus - for manual focus lenses set at infinity" would then give the finest world class camera body on the market.  Who could even compete with that?  Such a camera would be the Swiss Army Knife of camera bodies and a landmark in the history of camera design.

As an original SL (601) user, I’ve given the purchase of an SL2-S considerable thought. I like the 24mp & tech specs of the camera for stills and video, but not the redesign of the solid aluminum body and controls. (As mentioned earlier in this thread.)

I intend to continue using the original SL for some time, and would consider adding a second body if it was identical. I may end up looking for another SL 601 in the meantime, and wait to see what to see what the future holds for the further development of the SL series.

I will debunk myself… in part anyway. It turns out the SL2-S is only 217 grams (.48 Lbs) heavier than the Panasonic S5 so maybe the SL2-S weight is not so bad especially for those adapting Leica-M lenses.  Adding a heavy AF lens still gives a weighty overall kit.

Maybe some kind of Video can be added to the next M10 probably (called M11) as the electronic chips change over time without making the M11 too fat.
