Advertisement Posted February 1, 2021 Posted February 1, 2021 Hi Toks, Take a look here Voigtlander APO-LANTHAR 50mm f/2 Aspherical VM lens to be announced soon. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
SJH Posted February 1, 2021 Share #162  Posted February 1, 2021 Yes you will have to pay import tax now we’re out of the EU - they ship via FedEx (air I believe which is good in the EU at the moment!!) and the it was about £180. I ordered mine last Friday and arriving tomorrow, FedEx send you a text, you follow the link, pay the tax and then you have a delivery date.

This is clearly different from ‘free trade’ from a commercial perspective. There some weird things going on of course e.g. you buy a new Leica camera (I just got an SL-S for example) from the Leica UK site, it’s probably shipped from Germany to you but no import tax as it was purchased in the UK from a UK online store. This is for the Sony versions of the two lenses; I’ve not seen a specific M mount comparison. Looks like the 50/1.2 is very very good but the APO is a bit sharper and more even at all apertures. The 50/1.2 obviously is going to give you less DOF if you want it, and potentially has better bokeh.  The 50/1.2 sounds like a really good lens.  https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1561782/32?b=
Gobert Posted February 1, 2021 Share #167  Posted February 1, 2021 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) I’m somewhat puzzled, because it has a similar price tag as the 50/2.0 Edited February 1, 2021 by Gobert
BrianS Posted February 1, 2021 Share #168 Â Posted February 1, 2021 The APO-Summicron and re-issued 50/1.2 Noctilux are about the same price- just many times that of the Voigtlander lenses. My 85mm F4.5 Pentax UAT cost about the same as the original 50/1.2 Noctilux when both were new.

I notice Jo Geier doesn't charge VAT if sent to the UK, is this correct ? That would be fine then to pay on import thanks

A quick tip is to order the lens and hood as two separate orders, that way it appears you don't pay import duty as it's below £150 I believe.

My lens arrived yesterday and I have to say I'm glad I didn't buy the Leica 50mm APO F2 last week, when my finger was hovering over the buy button! Very early days but looking as stellar as the E-Mount version in reviews.
Gobert Posted February 2, 2021 Share #172  Posted February 2, 2021 @SJH why? So far I didn’t see any decent comparison under critical circumstances between the two lenses. Although the price of the Voigtlander seems attractive, I wait for more reviews before I decide.

I would have to guess that there are a few folks out there that have access to both lenses doing some in-depth comparisons between them. I would have to imagine there are a number of interested folks in such tests!! I don't have access to the Leica APO...but I shot with my Voigtlander a bit last weekend, and while I've not yet uploaded to my computer, looking at the shots on my M10M seem to really show some great performance with the lens....I hope to have time in the next day or two to move from the card to computer and process some of them. But early on, it looks pretty exciting....and I'd really like to see this head to head with the $$ Leica offering to see how they compare...I have to imagine we'll see those comparisons in the relatively near future. cayenne

Although the price of the Voigtlander seems attractive, I wait for more reviews before I decide. I’d agree with you but my view was that it was worth putting the Leica 50mm APO on hold whilst I (any many others better qualified) test it out given the price. However, I was encouraged by how may reviewers found the E-Mount version to be amongst the sharpest lens edge to edge for that platform. Overall as I say above early days but we may have Voigtlander’s best lens for the M Mount here but only time and a number of professional reviews will tell!! Now this is a very subjective and early speculation but this lens may well get so close the Leica as not to matter for the vast majority of people given it’s over 6 times the price. So far I’m really enjoying it on both my M10M and M10R!
Gobert Posted February 3, 2021 Share #175  Posted February 3, 2021 My approach is more or less the same. But I am concerned about the contribution of @sutlore regarding CA. My intention was to buy the APO 50, but if the Voightlander would be performing quite close to the APO 50, I might change my mind (my wife will be grateful). For now I am waiting for critical reviews, but I have two more fifties in the collection. Thus I consider it a luxury problem.
tgray Posted February 3, 2021 Share #176  Posted February 3, 2021 I guess I didn’t have to wait for formal reviews. The FE version has performed very well, comparable to the Leica 50 APO if I recall correctly.  That and the fact that I was never going to buy the Leica 50 anyway.  Anyway, the Voigtlander is priced around what a far too frequent Leica price increase would. Buy the Voigtlander and if you don’t like it, buy the Leica.

padam Posted February 3, 2021 Author Share #180 Â Posted February 3, 2021 Yes, it is the E-mount version but the differences will be very similar on the M-mount as well. The APO-Lanthar is sharper and better corrected but the Planar is still sharp and great value. 1
