That’s really cool. I find it quite tricky to achieve critical focus with these focus by wife lenses in the pitch black. Any pointers?

Thanks for liking the photo.

I know what you mean about it being tricky getting critical focus on stars.  I find it depends a lot on which lens is in use.  With the 23mm TL Summicron, I have to use manual focus.  With the Sigma L-mount 14-24mm f/2.8, autofocus was nailing the Milky Way last Summer on the same camera.  Go figure

The following would be my general pointers for getting sharp stars with manual focus.  It helps to have the Visoflex, but it isn't necessary.  Method 1: scintillation) focus until the brightest stars scintillate (flicker?) on the screen.  They should be tiny points, and some dimmer stars should come into view as well.  You can try having the manual focus aid outline the stars in red, but I haven't had luck with that.  Method 2: trial and error) When focusing manually, there should be a bar indicating focusing distance along the bottom of the view.  Note where the in-focus indicator is positioned when stars are best captured as points.  This will take a few trial exposures, but that's no big deal.  I found, in shooting the above photo, that when the indicator is pulled back just off of infinity focus, I got the most point-like star images with the 23mm 'Cron.

I hope that helps.  Maybe others with better methods will chime in.

Brent

P.S., I also think that having clouds (or anything else) in the frame confuses things with autofocus.

Thanks for your thoughts. Obviously I meant to say ‘focus by WIRE’ 😂

When I was trying this the other night my set up was with the CL and 35 lux TL, but the same will apply. Yes I was on MF too and that gave the best results but still, with no hard stops it’s a bit hit & miss nailing that focus on infinity.

For me, this picture sums up the end of winter when spring is coming back, announcing hope of better days. And as such, it has become my current Windows wallpaper, helping me deal with confinement.

Thought I'd share this with you all.

Stay safe @ home!
