Joan and the bishops

Putting my new lens through its paces at Winchester Cathedral. I find these memorial effigies good test subjects for new gear.

All taken at f/1.4. I can readily believe that Leica designed this lens to be at its best wide open.

I am amazed by the IQ and colors!... Are they from RAW, or JPEC?... How much PP?

This set is the best I have seen from T till now!... How fast is the AF?

Dear Robert, after posting these shots, Leica should give you a commission for each lens sold. ;)

Thank you very much, Michel!

Many thanks, Louis! These were shot raw and processed in Lightroom and Photoshop. I applied my usual processing regime which involves small adjustments to white balance, exposure and curves. This does tend to enhance the colours but my impression is that this lens renders colours quite faithfully.

For me AF is fast enough not to be noticeable, which is what I want from an AF camera. Even in low light it is good enough for me. For the subjects I usually photograph accuracy is more important than speed and I've found accuracy to be spot on even in relatively low light. There's a lot of heavy glass in this lens but the camera does not seem to have a problem moving it about quickly enough to achieve focus more or less instantly.

The one criticism I have of the lens is how prone it is to fringing on against the light edges. I wouldn't want to overplay it and it is easily dealt with in Lightroom but I would rather It didn't happen quite so readily.

This is Antony Gormley's sculpture Sound II in the crypt of Winchester Cathedral which floods whenever it rains heavily. Taken with the new TL 35 lens wide open as usual, ISO at 1600, white balance on auto.

I took this shot of the choir stalls in Winchester Cathedral to demonstrate the kind of out-of-focus areas this lens can produce. I’m not keen on the overuse of very blurred backgrounds but it’s good to know you’ve got it when you need it.

Here’s another blur demo shot. This time part of the canopy over the tomb of St Swithun.

For my eyes the blur doesn't work for the first set: too many distracting luminous points in the background. It's hard for the eyes to quickly find what's in focus and what's not.

However the second set works much better.

Of course, IMHO

I think the blur is not bad at all. If you are destructed by the background, I think it is more from the busy subject rather than from the lens. As the OP, Robert (euston), mentioned, he posted these shots as "Test", more to show us the blur  one can get with this lens, and therefore, I guess he chose a busy background to better demonstrate the lens capabilities.

In my view, there is no doubt that this lens is really superb,  and all the samples I have seen so far have been proving it to me.

As a non scientific comparison, I just wanted to post these shots that I took with T and Nikkor 85 mm, f/1.8 (the old and manual one), which still is considered as an excellent lens despite its old age. The rendering and blur are not bad, but there is something about the new 35 mm TL that I really find very attractive ( without mentioning that Robert is an excellent photographer and can take great photographs with any camera or lens!) ;)
