Hi all,

Well, I'm anxiously awaiting my first Leica's arrival today...the M10M.

And while I save my nickles and dimes for real Leica glass in the future, I've bought a few adapters to use to play with my new camera in the meantime...

I have a canon EF to M mount adapter, this is mostly to use some unique lenses I got from Lomography Kickstarter campaigns that I have had fun with on the old 5D3.

I have the Petzval 58mm lens, that has the separate aperture plates you put in it, for various aperture sizes and shapes, and is fun with the swirly bokeh you can manually control.

I also have the Lomogon Art lens...f/2.5...both of these are the brass lenses.

I was thinking these both would be fun "character" lenses on the new Monochrom coming in.

I have a Nikon F mount to M mount adapter with some old Nikon F mount lenses from back the day when our family had a Nikon FA black body camera....and the 50mm Nikon lens, I have used in the past for video  with the SLRMagic anamorphot. 1.33 lens adapter attached to it.

I thought it might prove fun and unusual to put that combo together and shoot the anamorphic shots and de-squeeze them into sort of panoramic type still shots.

Of course, I'm not looking to have super high resolution images like you have with real Leica glass, or even the modern 3rd party lenses like from Voightlander, but I thought it might prove fun.

I'm hoping to also keep an eye out for good deal on vintage lenses to try out, when I can find good. deals.

What about ya'll?

Any favorite adapted lenses or mounts in general you like to play with on your M cameras (film and digital)?

If you have some adapted images you'd like to share, please post those too and list what you used!!

I thought this might be a fun thread...hoping this is the forum to put this.

I saw other posts here about non-Leica branded M lenses, so thought this would be ok here too.

Thank you in advance,

cayenne

Hi Cayenne,

Lomography lenses (I have a few myself) are fun to use - and the results can sometimes be surprisingly good - but you won't see many pictures taken with them in this forum.

However, you'll find lots of pictures taken with all sorts of vintage/adapted lenses here:

https://www.l-camera-forum.com/topic/268173-the-view-through-older-glass/

Regarding mounts, adapters, etc., you'll find that starting with simple adapter rings gives you access to dozens of thread mount lenses that will happily play with your M10M.

I have adapted quite a few lenses to my CL and M8, M3, so neither of my Ms can take a digital Visoflex.

For the CL my favorite adapted lens is a Nikon 105 f2.8 Micro Nikkor, a little heavy but the images are sweet, I have also adapted a Nikon Seris E 100mm f2.8 very nice but not as good as the 105.

For wide angle on the CL I have adapted a Tokina f2.8 11-16mm (Nikon), the lens doesn't like being on manual focus. I have used it enough to know how to use it and the images are very nice.

Another CL adaptation a 40mm f2.8 Makro Kilar, I use it a little, or to copy photo prints, the focussing distance is too close. I bought it for a Canon F1 but a all but closest focus it vignetted, on the CL it works well.

I have Schneider Retina lenses I have adapted too. I have used a 28mm Schneider Retina Curtagon I have used on my Ms (zone focussing) decent lens, a 50mm f1.9 Xenon which I mostly use on the CL, a very nice lens. I also have a 135mm Schneider Retina Tele-Xenar a not so good lens.

Zeiss Contarex lenses : the adapters can be not so good (I have 3... and one of them quickly lost the functionality of diaphragm closure mechanism) , but the 18 Distagon is great, and the Sonnar 250 the best focal in its range to use 😎

I had a Contarex way back, it came with a 135 f2.8 which was a great lens, I also tried a 24 and 50 with it, both great. Then I allowed the guy who loaned me the lenses to take it to Europe, he dropped it into the Aegean going to Santori, just fond memories. He was a Leica repair specialist, I got a custom built M2 out of it.

My widest lens for my Leica M6 is a 21mm.

When I need something wider, I use a Nikon F to Leica M FotoDiox adapter to mount my following Nikkor lenses:

18mm f/3.5

16mm f/2.8 fisheye

14mm f/2.8

Since my Nikon lenses do not connect to the Leica rangefinder, I used zone focusing. For example, on my 18mm lens, I set the focus distance to 1-meter and the f/stop to f/11 so that everything from about 1/2 meter to infinity is in focus.

Canon 50mm F1.4 FL Mount- runs about $30 or so. Very low CA and Spherical Aberration- compares with the 50/1.2 Noctilux.

These are on my M Monochrom, CCD version- no Liveview. I made an RF cam for this lens. Out of a tubular leg from a busted tripod.

Classical lenses for the old Zeiss Ikon Contax are certainly my favourites.

Amedeo Muscelli's adapter which couples with the rangefinder works perfectly for 50mm and you can use it as well for longer focal lengthes using Live View. Unfortunatly the excellent wide angles with 35 and 21 mm cannot be used  since their rear elements are so large that they don't fit into the adapter.

With the Contax-to-M adapter you can also try some less usual lenses - like the Nippon Kogaku 1:2.5/10.5 cm with a "C" indicating that it was made for the Contax:

I've successfully used a Tamron 17/3.5, zone focused via an Adaptall II Canon FD adapter mounted on a Canon Converter B (which converts it to a Laica LTM mount), and then a LTM->M adapter. But my favorites are the old standby Elmar 50/3.5 red scale on an LTM->M adapter and a Nikkor 50/2.0 HC on an LTM->M adapter.

I have several adapters: Nikon F, Pentax K Canon EF and Leica R.

My most used is a Leica APO-Telyt 3,4/180, but the most useful is a Nikon Micro-Nikkor 55/2,8

The black faced Tessar doesn't look bad on a black M either. Though to be honest the 1:3.5-version is the much better lens.

Made me take out the Carl Zeiss Jena 8.5cm F2, this one is uncoated from 1937.

Homemade hood on it, really reduces flare.

All shots wide-open. I custom filed the cam on this adapter for the lens to be spot-on from 1.15m to infinity.

The original hood for the 85mm Sonnar ist not too difficult to find - here the postwar version 1120 S 49 on a prewar lens:
