Guest Posted September 11, 2020 Share #1 Posted September 11, 2020 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) I recently bought a ZEISS Planar T* 50mm f/2 ZM Lens for my M10-P; small, light, great build, excellent IQ, way cheaper than a Summicron. But I’d read some complaints about the Zeiss lens cap falling off all the time, especially with the lens hood affixed. That seemed like it would be annoying. So I took a chance and bought the Match Technical Lens Cap for Leica Q and Q2 Cameras - a hard rubber lens cap with a tether that fits over the lens hood - for $49. Fits like it was made for the Zeiss and seems very protective for when I throw the camera and lens in my go bag. You’re welcome. 😉 Welcome, dear visitor! 250swb Posted September 11, 2020 Share #2 Posted September 11, 2020 It's a very small photo, I'm having a hard time seeing if it really is as ugly as it first appears?
Viv Posted September 11, 2020 Share #3 Posted September 11, 2020 I share your pain. I lost a couple of Zeiss ZM lens caps, back in the day when I was shooting film with a Zeiss Ikon (wonderful camera) and subsequently shooting digital with a Leica M9 (not so wonderful). Viv Posted September 11, 2020 Share #5 Posted September 11, 2020 I was perhaps a bit spoiled, coming to the M9 after the Zeiss Ikon. The M9 had a relatively inferior viewfinder. In addition, the white balance of the M9 was wildly inconsistent and its frequent lockups tried my patience. Subjectively, the Zeiss felt much nicer in the hand. The precision of the film advance and the ingenious exposure compensation control were always very pleasant to use.
TomB_tx Posted September 11, 2020 Share #6 Posted September 11, 2020 (edited) The Ikon ZM had a clearer VF than any M model - a very under-rated camera. Different feel than Leica, but very nice to use. I still use mine. I changed my ZM lenses to generic pinch caps - easier to use, and I haven't lost one. Oh I’m sure you could tart it up by gluing on some glitter and crystal, or perhaps painting it a designer color. Sheesh. 🙄

Sheesh. 🙄 It's hard to deny the fact that it's not an attractive solution. On the plus side, it would be difficult to forget to remove before taking a shot since it would probably block the entire viewfinder 😉
Ko.Fe. Posted September 11, 2020 Share #9 Posted September 11, 2020 No way this lens is small. I can't recall any of ZM lens to be small. With protective, clear filter and hood, no need of the cap.
Guest Posted September 11, 2020 Share #10 Posted September 11, 2020 Compared to my faster M mount lenses, R mount lenses, and SL lenses, it’s small. As for throwing a camera and lens (w/ clear filter) into my everyday carry bag without a lens cap of some sort, ain’t gonna happen.
250swb Posted September 11, 2020 Share #11 Posted September 11, 2020 So don't throw it. But the best place for a lens cap is at home in a drawer where it can't be lost, a protective filter is fine.
lct Posted September 11, 2020 Share #12 Posted September 11, 2020 Sure the best place for a lens or hood cap is a drawer and for a filter the deepest pocket of the bag . Just kidding but my ZM caps are not worse than Leica's let alone CV's. And they stay in place when removing the hood. BTW there are at least two compact ZM lenses, my all time favorite ZM 35/2.8 and 50/1.5. ZM hoods are sturdy and very nice BTW. Welcome, dear visitor! TomB_tx Posted September 11, 2020 Share #13 Posted September 11, 2020 The ZM Planar hood is identical to the Voigtlander hood for the 35 f1.4 Nokton (which also takes 43mm filters) - and it can be cheaper.

Both are Cosina's i guess but the white paint of ZM hoods is easier to remove so i use them on both ZM and CV lenses for 10+ EUR. You only live once .
