david_choy58 Posted August 17, 2007 Share #1 Â Posted August 17, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Anyone have this lens here? Â I put mine on the L1 and it's pretty good from 80-150mm at f/4 but the lens looks soft from 150-200mm at f/4. Image is blurry.... Â Do you guys have the same results from this lens on DMR / R9 or Digilux3?
Advertisement Posted August 17, 2007 Posted August 17, 2007 Hi david_choy58, Take a look here R 80-200 f/4. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
stuny Posted August 17, 2007 Share #2 Â Posted August 17, 2007 My 80-200 is very sharp at all focal lengths, with or without the 2X extender both on my R8 and on my R8/DMR.
david_choy58 Posted August 17, 2007 Author Share #3 Â Posted August 17, 2007 Even at f/4 for 200mm? Oh no, I think mine is a bad copy....
andybarton Posted August 17, 2007 Share #4 Â Posted August 17, 2007 Am I right in thinking this is not the Minolta version, but the Leica one?
david_choy58 Posted August 17, 2007 Author Share #5 Â Posted August 17, 2007 It's the latest Leica one...
pascal_meheut Posted August 17, 2007 Share #6 Â Posted August 17, 2007 I had one and it was excellent event at 200mm and f/4. Not as good as the 180/2.8 APO but still very, very sharp.
sdai Posted August 17, 2007 Share #7 Â Posted August 17, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have never coupled a R lens to any 4/3 camera ... is there focusing confirmation available? if not, I'd guess it's a lot more difficult to focus when you push to the tele end. Â And the 80-200 is noticeably heavier than other Japanese zoomers. All being said, it's definitely one of the best in Leica's current lineup, it may not compare to the 180 prime but Color Foto even rated it higher than the 70-180 ROM. Â That's not a fair comparison anyways, both the 180 cron and 180 Elmarit are among the very top performers in the Leica lineup.
telyt Posted August 17, 2007 Share #8 Â Posted August 17, 2007 Both photos below were made with the 80-200 f/4 at f/4, at or near 200mm: Â Â Â This is the first zoom lens I've really liked.

topoxforddoc Posted August 17, 2007 Share #10 Â Posted August 17, 2007 I'm really happy wityh my 80-200/4 ROM. I use it wide open a lot eg for stage photos, and it's pretty good all round. Â Charlie
cwf Posted August 18, 2007 Share #11 Â Posted August 18, 2007 Assuming the L1 is like the Digilux 3 in this respect, if the issue is focusing perhaps using Live View with the magnification set to 10x would be useful. A tripod would seem necessary given the long lens and use of LV. At least that is what I am thinking may be the case with the considerably shorter VE35-70/4. farnz Posted August 18, 2007 Share #12 Â Posted August 18, 2007 David, Â You've said that your shots are sharp up to 150mm but blurry up to 200mm: have you ruled out camera wobble? At 200 mm and with the L1's 2x crop factor you'd need to use a shutter speed of, say, 1/500th or faster. Â Pete.
telyt Posted August 18, 2007 Share #13 Â Posted August 18, 2007 Doug:Â What Camera did you use? SL? Â SL2 for the hawk and either SL or SL2 for the owl. I've added a tripod collar to my lens so that I can use my shoulder stock/monopod rig with it. This configuration helps me get sharp pictures at slower shutter speeds, like 1/60 sec. albertknappmd Posted August 18, 2007 Share #14 Â Posted August 18, 2007 had the 80-200 for a while and was never disappointed. the 70-180 is in another league... :)
jrgeoffrion Posted August 19, 2007 Share #15 Â Posted August 19, 2007 Anyone have this lens here? Â I put mine on the L1 and it's pretty good from 80-150mm at f/4 but the lens looks soft from 150-200mm at f/4. Image is blurry.... Â Do you guys have the same results from this lens on DMR / R9 or Digilux3? Â This lens is deadly sharp across the range at all aperture. Make sure the images are looking are in focus and that the shutter speed is high enough to prevent camera movement.
