Advertisement Posted September 3, 2020 Posted September 3, 2020 Hi pocholin, Take a look here CL+Sigma 100-400 O.I.S.. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jaapv Posted September 5, 2020 Author Share #102 Posted September 5, 2020 I have no complaits about the lens after a bit of shooting in. No focus, OIS or other complaints. Nice detail rendering and sharpness. The only thing that is a minor downside is that the bokeh can be a bit busy in some shots like this. Maybe I should have stopped down a bit. It is no different from other telezooms in this respect, though. Welcome, dear visitor! nicci78 Posted September 29, 2020 Share #104 Posted September 29, 2020 (edited) Sigma 100-400mm DG DN review in the latest issue of Chasseur d’images : Welcome, dear visitor! As registered member you'd see an image here… Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! Sharpness is really excellent at every focal lengths. The lens use lots of software corrections: vignetting, CA and distortions. NB : the forum insist to show the square image sideways. Weird. nicci78 Posted September 29, 2020 Share #105 Posted September 29, 2020 @jaapv was right about electronic shutter Sigma OS tech is almost useless. No effect whatsoever. Except with electronic shutter where you gain basically only 1 stop. To sum up. With mechanical shutter 100-400mm DG DN is like a non stabilised lens. Even IBIS did not help it. With electronic shutter you get only 1 stop improvement. Measurements were made on Sony A7R III but it should be comparable with L-mount. At least close enough. The problem here ? Sigma did not have proper stabilisation technologies (hardware and software). What a shame.
nicci78 Posted September 29, 2020 Share #106 Posted September 29, 2020 (edited) You can buy the latest Chasseurs d’images issue. If you read french. There is also SL2 + APO-Summicron-SL line up review. To sum up : SL2 is awesome. But Canon R5 and R6 are even better. APO-Summicron-SL line up is nice but nothing to write home. They are not awesome. The best among them is 90mm, the weakest is the 50mm. Actually 50mm is a disappointment. One interesting point : APO-Summicron-SL line up work better with SL2 than with S1/S1R. Apparently the different sensor stack filter is the culprit. Before saying that Chasseur d’images did not understand Leica world. You should know that its former editor in chief and still editor is a Leica and Hasselblad user. Using them professionally and being one the best macro photographer in the world. There must be a difference between the L mount technology and the Sony - probably due to the reverse engineering vs. access to the firmware. This one was in the last light on a rainy day completely freehand, no tripod, chest pod or leaning somewhere; 1/30th@ 400 mm (no artistic credit ) using Electronic Shutter. Welcome, dear visitor! nicci78 Posted September 29, 2020 Share #108 Posted September 29, 2020 (edited) There is no reverse engineering with Sony E/FE mount. It is a free to access mount. (Sony gives every technical aspect for making E/FE lenses) Actually Sigma lens may even work better in Sony world than in L-mount. At least every functionalities are supported with Sony bodies. please note that the magazine states that 20% of images at 1/15th are sharp. But they only take into account the 100% mark. The only relevant for them. Edited September 29, 2020 by nicci78
jaapv Posted September 29, 2020 Author Share #109 Posted September 29, 2020 In fact I managed to get recognisable shots in pitch-dark - well, the camera did not manage to handle the low light, this is ISO 3200 4 or 5 stops underexposed, so ISO 50.000/100.000 equivalent - that is not what the CL was made for. This one is rescued from the bin for this post. Anyway, I managed ⅓" at 400 mm completely freehand with over 50% showing acceptable motion blur. The problem was getting focus. And getting light onto the sensor. I really think that we should discuss the L mount lenses on L mount bodies, not be faffing around with Sony technology. We all know that the O.I.S. only started working on this lens after updating the CL. My conclusion: it works well on an L mount lens on an L mount body. CdI's conclusion: it does not work properly on a Sony mount lens on Sony body. Yes? And what is the relevance for this forum? Edit: applying a 100% standard to a test that involves a human factor is ridiculous. For all we know the tester might be suffering from Parkinson's disease. Welcome, dear visitor! jaapv Posted September 30, 2020 Author Share #113 Posted September 30, 2020 (edited) You won't regret it. A top-end Leica (R or L) it is not, but it is a very useful lens with very good IQ. One piece of advice: get the tripod ring Edited September 30, 2020 by jaapv
lawman Posted October 1, 2020 Share #114 Posted October 1, 2020 I purchased the TS111 Tripod ring kit which comes with 2 small screws which the instructions say should be installed in the Arca Swiss mount as a safety measure. The mounting foot fits well in my Sirui tripod head - but not with the 2 screws installed. Are these just something that would apply to a Sigma tripod head mount? Thanks
jaapv Posted October 2, 2020 Author Share #115 Posted October 2, 2020 I left the screws off as I couldn't figure out the rationale and the foot is just fine on the Arca-Swiss mount on my tripod.

For anyone interested, Think Tank makes a telephoto lens case that fits the Sigma lens, 1.4 teleconverter and mounting foot quite nicely.

jaapv Posted October 3, 2020 Author Share #120 Posted October 3, 2020 I just found out why the lens is so power hungry. The O.I.S. drive keeps running, albeit muted and presumably disengaged even when O.I.S. is switched off. 2
