Often, expensive when new cars that have not yet attracted the serious collectors and money launderers (a significant amount of high priced art sells at auction through money launderers) are lovely money pits, sold at what seems to be bargain basement prices since they require so much expensive work, and after that so much expensive maintenance.  That might be a Pinin Farina badge low on the front wing.  Does your neighbor's car have the PF badge?  If so, one would wonder if a prior owner placed it there.

Thanks Stuart,

Very interesting points. I did not have a chance to look critically at the car - I was surprised to see a Silver Dawn coupe - I had no idea such a thing existed. I did ask my neighbour about finding parts - he did not provide any meaningful answer. I am sure that is would be an awful money pit if done up properly.

Whether the body was actually by Pinin Farina I do not know. The engine looked credibly like a SIlver Dawn, and the car was certainly a 2 door coupe. From what I could see the body looked close to the Google picture above, and not totally unlike the standard sedans.

When I walked up his driveway after noticing the iconic grill, I was expecting a fairly standard Silver Cloud or Shadow - so my surprise at finding a clearly rare RR coupe.

It might be that a prior owner let it go for a small price, after assessing the looming costs of doing it up right. The car was very far from usable.

Many of our motor mania friends know that i lost a Magnum SRT8 Hemi to a mini-van filled with teens who sideswiped the Magnum sending it into a fairly substantial Magnolia tree. Recently traveled to the RM Sotheby's Auburn Auction to bid on an identical one, but with only 5K miles! Didn't win the bidding battle. Returning home somewhat disappointed, my son and husband decided my sadness needed relief and talked me into the 'big on attitude' and size "Jimmy" 3500 HD. Watch out Low Country. She's on the loose. :0)

Nice car of course but, oddly enough, I would much rather have the car just visible at the left of the image! I had one as a daily-driver for 16 years but sold it about eight years ago.

Sadly missed.

This car you covet comes to Cars & Coffee often. Perhaps I can get it as the main subject.  Cheers.  Patty

That would be very kind and most accomodating of you! Having said that it would, of course, also rub salt into my stil-open wound of having sold my own one............

I know that somewhere between 70 - 75% of total 914 production went to the US so in your neck of the woods they were fairly commonplace - especially on the western seaboard - but I believe I'm correct in saying there were only around 5 dozen ever imported to the UK when they were current - and this was over a 6-year timeframe. Hardly surprising as, at the time, the top-spec version was more expensive to buy in the UK than was an E-Type Jag......

Philip.

Thought about posting this in this month's Barnack's 'wood' forum, but there's so much more here than just an old wooclad steering wheel....'39 Tipo #158 Alfetta.

Another posting that's probably better off here than the Barnack's monthly for November...............an entirely original 1934 Pierce-Arrow station wagon, with  'woodie' conversion' done by Joe Cantrell, and the prototype Airstream-like trailer, also by Pierce-Arrow.The car was owned by the original owner and his family for over 50 years, during which time it has been driven to practically every National park in the country...........both extremely rare.
