Almost as good optically as the same lens from Sony but weaker autofocus.

Keep in mind that he's testing the Sigma on a Sony.

I find it odd that he tests for resolution in the near/macro range, using bank notes. Super-zoom lenses are probably optimized for a longer range. That's always a limitation though. Long-range resolution tests often tell you more about the weather, and the tripod, than they do about the lens. I remember a Zeiss article that said that you can only reach the full potential of a lens on a still day, in the few minutes after sunrise.

The idea that lenses are only optimized for one particular subject distance range is a bit old-fashioned.

Once a lens is made with a variable optical formula (e.g. zooms, internal focusing, and/or floating elements), it can be optimized for any and all focus ranges. Not all are - but the potential is present.

E.G. the 75 APO-Summicron-M, which has pretty much identical (excellent) resolution from infinity to 0.7m (1:7 magnification). Or (speaking of old-fashioned) the original 24mm f/2.8 Nikkor-N from 1967, which was the first general-use prime lens for 35mm photography to use floating elements (what Nippon Kogaku called CRC - close-range-correction) - for just that reason.

Now of course a zoom may be optimized for different focal lengths (better resolution at 100mm than 400mm, or vice-versa). But that is more a question of just how complicated, large, and expensive the manufacturer is willing to make it - not an optical necessity.

He does address the distance question - and comments on performance at various distances. But. as he notes, once one gets near infinity on long kenses distortion by air becomes a factor.

Wondering if anyone else had bad news on the 100-400 front.  Just spoken with dealer who has my deposit, after speaking with Sigma July 10th date out of the window in UK - probably looking mid- August.  😒

Yesterday my dealer told me they were expecting the lens “ end of the week” Of course, they may have been unaware of new developments.

Well hopefully supply where you are will be better, I can't wait to see how the lens performs on the CL.

The previous word I heard for these parts, specifically Singapore, was that the lens would be in stores by July 10.  Now my favorite local store says end July/early August.

I just sent a query to the local Sigma office, hoping for something more enlightening than an "f/32" response . . .

Update: I just received a message from my favorite local shop that the Sigma 100-400mm L-mount arrived this afternoon.  I'll pick up my copy tomorrow morning.

Also I noticed on a USA website that the seller expects stock on the 15th, so hopefully the lens is on its way to other places as well. 😀

Let's hope, but so looking forward to seeing and hearing your experience with the lens.  Just checked with my supplier UK - still thinking mid August.

Looking forward seeing (more) photos with the lens, particularly the out of focus rendering/bokeh at 400 mm, as well as how the lens controls flare. The review posted by @Ivar B (post #21) looks promising!

I am seriously considering ordering one. At the very least, extremely competitively priced.

Well, I expect that the price is based on high sales expectations. The lens is not only interesting for CL/TL owners, it is an affordable and compact alternative to Leica’ s 90-280 for SL2 owners and they offer it in different mounts. I still cannot imagine what Leica was thinking, leaving this gap in their system. They could have sold plenty at double the price or more.
