glenerrolrd Posted January 29, 2020 Share #1 Posted January 29, 2020 Advertisement (gone after registration) One of the frequently requested improvements for the S3 would be an improved AF system . This seems unlikely given that Leica appears to have continued with the Maestro 2 processor . Leica Rumors has a draft of the S3 users manual (filed with a licensing dept somewhere ). What does this description mean : Phase Detection process in Live View mode based on contrast
Advertisement Posted January 29, 2020 Posted January 29, 2020 Hi glenerrolrd, Take a look here S3 AF ?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
frame-it Posted January 29, 2020 Share #2 Posted January 29, 2020 probably uses a combination of pdaf [faster] and cdaf [more accurate] to get proper focus.
setuporg Posted January 29, 2020 Share #3 Posted January 29, 2020 As was noted, the manual is from the last year and we'll hopefully have more info soon...
LocalHero1953 Posted January 29, 2020 Share #4 Posted January 29, 2020 I've seen the same question in another thread - nobody understood it there either!
glenerrolrd Posted January 30, 2020 Author Share #5 Posted January 30, 2020 Ok I had not previously seen the draft users manual ..so was assuming it was new . Accept that the description of the AF system in the users manual is pretty confusing . Has anyone seen this description anywhere in previous Leica documentation on the S 007 . (best guess is the AF system is the same in the S3 as the S 007 with upgrades that can be done thru firmware enhancements ). Another possibility is that Leica is cooperating with Panasonic and using he AF technology form the S1R and the SL2 ...which appears to be a hybrid system of phase and contrast detection . This is less likely unless they upgrade the Maestro processor at the same time . For many users this is a important distinction because at 64MPs ...accurate ,consistent AF is critical to obtaining the best image quality .
Stuart Richardson Posted January 30, 2020 Share #6 Posted January 30, 2020 I think it is highly unlikely that there is any new system, or they would have specifically highlighted it when they announced the camera. I would imagine that the best we can hope for is that they have improved upon the existing system that was in the 007, but that is likely only going to be clear once the camera is released and is in the hands of users. It’s slower in comparison apparent from some of those reviewer online.
mgrayson3 Posted January 31, 2020 Share #8 Posted January 31, 2020 I was thinking about the aphorism "Those who know don't talk and those who talk don't know." At first, I thought it might be summarized (know XOR talk), but that implies one or the other. Actually, (know => ~talk) does it, as the other half is the contrapositive. Or maybe (know intersect talk == null). Same thing, but symmetric.
