Hi, mine looks like the one on the left but it is M mount not LTM; I believe they are the same fitting which is a 39mm filer thread, but a 42mm inside diameter cap fit.

If your lens looks like the on the left, it is the A36 version, which does not have a 39mm filter thread. That's why the lens caps for both versions are different (the lens cap for the older version has a smaller diameter).

The good thing with Leitz/Leica lenses is compatibility since almost a century 😉...

Here, my trio old LTM lenses that I use on my Monochrom :

We can see that those 35/50/90 have LTM to M adapters and on Summaron 3.5/3.5cm another filter E39 size to A36 called SOOGZ,

not seen A42 cap for soogz and the other two need A36 caps

I thought it best to show my lens, so images attached. I measured the outside diameter of the front ring and it is 42mm.  I hope this helps to obtain better clarification. Thanks

Your lens has 39mm filter mount and needs the A42 cap, which is the most common cap to be used for many lenses up to the current 1:4/90mm Makro-Elmar.

The lens is part of the first series of 35mm Summarons, which were made for the M3 to be used with additional finder. I am not sure though but I think it activates the frames for 50mm with an M-Camera - not 35mm with an M2 or a later model.
Btw: the rear element of your lens looks very good on your photo;         the Summarons often are rather foggy on the rear element, obviously no problem for your lens.

Hi, that’s an interesting point you have made. I had looked at a few of these and dismissed ones which came with ‘goggles’ for the reason you state. This one from a well known LONDON Leica dealer doesn’t appear to have any fixings for ‘goggles’ and they made no mention of the framelines in the listing or when I spoke to them (we didn’t discuss that particular issue just condition etc); I assumed as there were no apparent fixings that the lens would activate the correct framelines; perhaps I need to check.

The first Summarons with M-bayonet - and according to the serial number, your‘s is a very early one - were made for the M3 which had no 35mm frame.  So the lenses just keep the normal 50mm frame of the M3 and you had to use the additional viewfinder SBLOO to get the proper field of view for 35mm. The goggled versions were introduced later - still only with 50mm frame, but the additional goggles enlarged its field of view. When the M2 was introduced later again, they offered a „proper“ version which activates the 35mm frame.

Here is a thread were you get almost any information you can get about the Summarons for the M:

Hi again, thanks for the link, I’m obtaining a greater understanding, and now realise that this issue is more than about the missing lens cap; and perhaps I should have researched this more! I basically wanted a reasonably priced 35mm to compliment my 28mm Elmarit and 50mm Summarit  and planned to use this predominantly on an M6 although I also have a digital M which I would use it with occasionally. I really liked the idea of using a ‘vintage’ lens (mainly for street photography), as I can't justify spending 1000’s on a more modern version.    I now have more questions!  Can I use this by selecting the correct framelines once mounted and will the rangefinder accurately focus, or should I return the lens and wait to source a later, ‘affordable’ alternative.
