What do you think the specs might be and would you be interested in one? How would the image be better/different than the Q or Q2 set to Monochrome settings? PhotoCruiser Posted December 31, 2019 Share #2 Posted December 31, 2019 A monochrome sensor will (probably) record better quality monochrome photos similar than a color sensor and reducing the colors to grey levels. Some will need that some will just use color and the 3rd party software solutions to create stunning monochome photos. I was a great lover of monochrome films, but in those times there was no software to easily transform color to grey. I personally would not buy a "castrated" camera able to record only gray levels but there will be photographers who enjoy that or have enough money to buy a second camera just for monochrome photography. Herr Barnack Posted January 2, 2020 Share #5 Posted January 2, 2020 I think a lot of Leica shooters would buy a monochrome Q2 if it were offered; but "a lot of Leica shooters" is a pretty small number, given that Leica has 1% of the digital camera market (or so I have read). To complicate matters, a monochrome Q2 would eat into sales of the M246 or its successor to some degree. My SL is my serious image maker with M glass. Monochrome sensors deliver indescribable images. Like JAAPV, these images have a "flavor" unlike any other. If I choose to pursue such images, I will seek an older monochrome body for my M glass. The Monochrome images have superior tonality and detail compared to what I usually get converting files from my SL, Q and CL, though the results of those conversions are usually pretty darn good. I would consider buying a Q2M, if the price is not more than half that of the M10M. I do hope that the new Monochrome sensor is better at handling highlights than the M246M. Highlights are recovered by by Bayer cameras by interpolating the non-blown colour channels.eg., suppose your blue channel is blown, the camera will create data from the red and green channels. Can they produce such a high quality image that exceeds a monochrome image produced by a current model M or Q2? I mean SO much better that it matters? Just curious to have your thoughts. A BW photo shot with a BW sensor is better, plus from a purist view - and Leica is somehow a purist camera brand - the best photo is the perfect one one straight out of the camera. I personally believe that with the modern photo editing software the monochrome effect can be simulated more than good enough for 90% of all BW photos, but a B/W sensor will record some more details and it is hard to say if the cannot be simulated by software. In the times of film the things where different as a color negative could never make a high quality BW paper photo and for this reason the BW films and papers where used, the problem remains the same but today software help to create stunning BW photos out of RGB data. I can understand that BW lovers would like to have a BW camera but for me this would be too much $$$ to fork out for a camera i would use not too often. I was told the M10R should have a 47 MP sensor. When exactly it will arrive is locked away in the Leica vault. Not even the dealers know...just like how Apple treats its new products. Probably just as well, they learned announcing a product that is a year away for delivery isn't a very good business model. People forget, Leica is a small niche camera company with only 1800 employees...and all the products are hand made. Anyways, that is what I know now. If you look at all the great products that have arrived in the last 10+ years; i.e. S system, Monochrom, CL, SL, M lenses...the list continues to grow and surprise. The other thing I learned in life is: "Never say never"...because quite often, "never" circles back and there you are facing what you thought was gone forever with no return....same goes for Leica... r/ Mark 2 Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...
