Sample variation. The two Summicron 35 ASPH versions are optically identical. The 28 Summicron and Elmarit ASPH vII lenses are tweaked very slightly compared to the vI, lenses, but not the 35. I like the new hood better though.

"Sample variation". So are you really saying that some Leica 35/2  ASPH lenses are sharper than others and its just a matter of luck what lens you get? Really?

You should look up LensRentals’ Roger Cicala’s writings, and rigorous optical tests, on the subject... across manufacturers.

Or different focusings as often with rangefinders. Leica MTF charts look identical anyway.

Thanks lct, in the link above the high resolution comparison was done with a Sony A7

Jeff

Thanks for the info Jeff,

My goal was to give the OP an option based on my experience and an actual comparison done on a high resolution sensor. For all I know the OP may already have  a 35/2 ASPH v2 and is not satisfied.

I have no intention of hijacking this thread so I won't respond to further comments regarding my post so as to get this thread back on track.

In the future try to take the time to provide an actual link that proves your point rather than telling me to go do my homework. If nothing else it proves that you've done your homework.

Sorry if i sound negative but i would not rely on A7 bodies whose sensor stacks are too thick, unless you've been using a Kolari modded body.

I generally do *, but in this case there are dozens of related articles on the site.  Here’s one that might pique your curiosity...

I’m hardly the only one to recognize Roger’s contributions, on this and other subjects.  His company rents gear from many manufacturers, and does its own repairs (and fun tear downs) to ensure proper operation and to investigate important gear related issues.  Lens sample variation  is one such topic.

The Leica 35mm M lens is past ready for a "digital update".  As pointed out other lenses in the M range have gone APO or at least tweaked for digital sensor.

Supposedly Leica has been very cautious to label lenses "APO".  According to Erwin Puts the 90mm Macro Elmar-M is essentially , but not stringently apochromatic, therefore not labeled as such.

With the latter in mind, how is the apochromatic character of the 35mm f2.4 Summarit-M?

Wasn’t the 35 Cron “updated for digital” within the past two years at least according to Leica’s marketing, along with adding the metal hood and aperture blade?

I think a newly updated 35 Cron would be interesting. I had heard a rumor about a potential 50 Lux replacement in the coming years as well.
