This is a follow-up to my post of 6/11/20.  After upgrade to SL2, my VE 24-90 became jittery and noisy when operating the zoom mechanism.  Sent it in to Leica US mid June, 10 days later sent to Leica Germany.  With Covid, the estimated turnaround quoted was 12 weeks.  Received the lens back yesterday.  The lens now functions as new (without any noise or jittering).  Am not entirely sure what was done.  Received one notice of short delay for a back ordered part but when lens was returned the work done mentioned only 'adjustment of zoom and general mechanisms'.  The lens is 4.5 years old; it is my main lens but used gently.  There was no charge for the repair.

I enjoy this lens and am very pleased that Leica returned it to normal function.  These things always take longer than one would like but given COVID, I can not complain.

Hi guys, just to confirm that I do also encounter this "clicking" noise issue with my newly purchased 24-90 + SL2 as well, that's why I found this thread. I didn't thought it was a problem because the lens feels so great on hand and it's a brand new one so never thought this could be an issue from Leica.

Until several days latter I feel like this "clicking" noise making zooming while filming seems impossible, and mine was really crazy, almost each focus length change has a crisp click sound, from ~28mm to ~85mm, and surprisingly no clicking sound form 24-28 and from 85-90...
note that my Camara Firmware is 1.0 and Lens Firmware is also 1.0, by reading from what Leica had for lens firmware updates, sounds like they acknowledge for this issue thus they have included Lens Firmware 1.2 for there own 24-90 lens that will "reduce operating noise", but installing 1.2 firmware on SL lens need Leica SL2 to upgrade it's firmware to at lease 2.0, and Leica SL at least to 1.37 I think. so to my curiosity I upgrade both camera firmware to 2.0 as well as lens firmware to 1.2

Surprisingly, the clicking noise does go of for a great amount, but still there, now I can hear the crispy clicking only 5-6 times across the full 24-90 zoom ( compared to what I hand ~ 50-60 clicks for the full zoom ) so I can confirm it's definitely firmware related, also camera body operating related. letting along it has absolutely no clicking when powered off. I've also tried turn to Manual focusing, turn of stabilization etc, nothing works to get rid of the clicking sound when operating.

the good thing is that I just purchase no more than 10 days from B&H(a huge camera store here in NYC) and hence still in return / exchange period, so I went to the customer service requested for a replacement, and to my surprise again, me was not the very first one of report of this issue this year(2020) they do have another same reports back in April and send it back to Leica for repair as well. so they said they will send mine to Leica for inspection and repair, meanwhile they replaces another brand new one for me, which, to be expected, has absolutely NO clicking sounds at all, NO operating noise neither. and manufacturing data was Feb/ 2020, so pretty much can confirm it's a defect that needs to be inspected by Leica and shouldn't be a normal behavior... but my 2nd one auto updates the firmware to 1.2 once connected to my 2.0 firmware SL2 so I don't have a chance to inspect it when it's still 1.0 firmware...

So in brief, if you find this tread regarding to your Leica 24-90 zooming noise in SL2 body:
1. try to upgrade firmware of both camera and lens, to see if the clicking sound goes away or not.
2. if it's newly purchased, you decide if you want to upgrade firmware or not ( upgrade brings new features and fixes bugs anyway so it's suggested ), but if yours is making crazy noise like my 1st copy, just replace it, a normal behavior of leica 24-90 should be stealth quite! no any sound when it's turn on. you should be only hearing your camera operation noise in a very quite room, but still your lens should not making any noise louder than the camera itself.

Spoke with the Leica rep. Totally normal - per the factory. The clicking sound while zooming is the stepping motor or linear motor which controls the aperture blades.

Why this occurs on this lens and not the other zooms? They didn't say. Perhaps it is because the other two lenses are internally focusing?  They are all variable aperture lenses.

Don't lose sleep - take beautiful photos!

Where did you guys find version 2.1 of the lens? I went here and downloaded the latest firmware (Date: 25/03/2020) but this seems to be V1.2 (the lens was already at 1.2 and when I attempt an update the camera says that the file is at the same version as the installed firmware).

Hello all. I started this thread which has popped up again. My SL2 has FW 2.0 Is that not the latest? My 24-90 hasn’t been used for a while. The camera reports FW 1.2 for it. The zoom clicking still exists.
My understanding is that the lens updates are part of the camera updates.

The available lens update appears to be aimed at using with the CL I have one but that would seem an odd way to update the lens if the SL2 FW doesn’t include it..

What am I missing?

How did you install the mentioned V2.1?

EDIT: I found in another thread that the correct lens FW update appears currently only on the SL2-S page of the US website.

https://us.leica-camera.com/Photography/Leica-SL/Leica-SL2-S/Downloads

For whatever reason the international website that I normally use does not show the SL2-S at all for me currently. I don’t know why that is so but it’s a website issue not a camera one of course.

The firmware update is here:  https://us.leica-camera.com/Photography/Leica-SL/Leica-SL2-S/Downloads  the FW download is the last one at the bottom of the page.

For some odd reason Leica have placed this lens update under the SL2-S section, even though it's not SL2-S specific.

Awesome, thanks @michali! I can confirm that the clicking is now gone for me as well. It didn't bother me too much but it made the lens feel somewhat cheap, so I am super happy it's gone now 😀

BYTW welcome to the Forum.

In addition to sorting out the clicking on the VE24-90mm, the main benefit of this update is that it introduces linear focus and 90-360 degree focus turn options in MF mode.  MF is now fast & accurate, without literally going around in circles trying to lock on to focus. It  significantly improves manual focus for SL lenses.

I received my SL2-S today, and I updated the lens firmware for my 24-90 to 2.1.   I can also confirm that the loud clicking noise I experienced for my 24-90 on my SL2 is now gone, and it performs almost silently on both the SL2-S and the SL2.  I'm very happy.

I have now obtained the lens FW  via the SL2-S webpage on the US Leica Camera site. Installation was easy and my two Summicron SL lenses and the 24-90 all updated correctly with the new functions working on my SL2. No more zoom clicks with the 24-90, so that concern finally resolved for me.
Thank you to those providing the correct link for the correct lens FW and information.
I don't know why the international website still doesn't show the SL2-S page and that download .
I imagine that the lens update will be folded into the next SL2 update as well.

Many thanks for the information guys. I've just updated my 24-90 to the latest, but when I tried to update my 16-35 and 50 Summilux it said the firmware was the same as on the card. I therefore assume it was only the 24-90 which got an update.

I can say that the Apo-Summicron-SL 35mm and 50mm received an update too. The version went from V1.0 to V2.0

Tom the VE 90-280mm L also got the update.  The 16-35mm L & 50 f1.4 L did not get an update.

Thanks for that, as I'd forgotten to check my 90-280. Because of it's size I keep it in a different draw and so I totally overlooked it.

Thanks again.
