Yesterday was a spectacular fall day, probably the last good weather we'll see here until spring. I took a photo walk along the river near my house and right away saw my neighbor putting in his hand made boat. It's a beautiful vessel that he made in his garage over the span of an entire summer--literally hundreds of hours.

Hello Brent,

Nice photo.

That looks like a type of bridge design that was sometimes used when people were building bridges along the "Lincoln Highway" in the old days.

Is this, by any chance, a bridge along the "Lincoln Highway"? Whether or not this is an actual old bridge or a modern replacement.

Best Regards,

Michael

Hi Michael,

This bridge is just down the street from my house. It's situated in the heart of the near east side of Madison, so a solid residential area. It's actually an exact replica of the original bridge that was built in 1916. It had begun to crack so this one was built to replace it. One of the original cement columns is in our back garden and in the non-winter months has a large potted plant on it. In the winter, hawks have been known to perch on it.

I probably have somewhere around 300 photos in my collection that have either this bridge or the original one in them.

Cheers,

Brent

Hello Brent.

Around 1916 is when a lot of the early Lincoln Highway bridges of that type were built from the East Coast to the West Coast.  Somewhat South of you: The Lincoln Highway is also called "Route 30" at its mid point in Kearny, Nebraska. Altho it also has a number of other names at its Eastern end & at its Western end.

Best Regards,

Michael

It would be an interesting photo project for someone to take the whole route and shoot all the bridges. Here's a shot showing the full bridge from my kayak, and one of the column from the original bridge that's in our back garden.

Hello Brent,

Nice photos.

This looks pretty much just like a bridge not very far from here, Longitude 74 21' 43" West, along the Lincoln Highway. There is a group doing things like you suggest. It is called the Lincoln Highway Association. I am a member. I would guess that when a successful design, like this bridge, is developed & agreed on, then it is constructed repeatedly in locally adapted forms. Seems reasonable to me. The Lincoln Highway Association tries to to preserve the parts that are left & Educate People about the Highway & its History.

Best Regards,

Michael

A while back you posted a photo of children jumping off a to swim.  Is this the same bridge?

No, but it's just a short distance away. The one the kids were jumping from is just a pedestrian bridge. This one is for cars.
