What are some future outcomes if the S system is discontinued?

With the prototype recall, and the used market tanking, I wonder if it's a good time to pick up a 007.  A body could be had for under $6500 and an $8K lens goes for half that.

If the S3 fails to materialize or is cancelled, will that trajectory continue?  So DSLR fans could experiment with the medium format at not so ridiculous markups...  Saying that as a year-long X1D user now with the MkII and a good range of lenses, which is a paradox I know.  Given the pros like @Vieri did a switch from S to X1D, I'm not so sure it's a good idea...  But a good OVF is always my favorite so I also have a Pentax K1 and was a Fuji X100/X-Pro user since its very beginning, but switched to the Leica M system almost exclusively until the last year when it started be 50:50 with the X1D.

The MF look is unique and an OVF is missing on X1D of GFX systems.  EVF is just never the same.

Of course if S is discontinued it will become a rarity and the prices would bottom out and might even pick up at some point...

I would think that once the S3 hits the retail market (assuming it is well received), that S lens prices will firm up somewhat from the current depressed levels.  If Leica goes mirrorless in the future, conceivably there'd be an adapter as well.

S lenses  also work quite well with the Leica adapter on the SL 601, and presumably the next generation SL, so there's that option that should remain too.

That's true too, but one always wants to buy cameras as good deals, to keep.

A good deal for me is when I get enjoyment and good use from the gear, and produce pics worthy of display prints. I can't know that value until I use it for a good while, and it's not a monetary one in any case.  But that's just me, as an enthusiastic hobbyist, not a pro.

A good deal?...that's for you to define. If you wait two years and get a camera for $4000 less at that point, was it worth the wait not having it to use in the meantime?  If you buy it and the price goes up, and you’ve enjoyed everything about it, will you sell it to make a few bucks?  I don't think or worry about such stuff.  It's a tool.

It is almost a year from the announcement with so much as a peep from Leica...I wish they would at least give people some idea of what is going on...we are five or six months past the initial delivery estimate, and it is not like the announced camera seemed so dramatically different from the existing one...different sensor, but same Maestro processor, same body etc...

I was at Leica's Washington DC store this past weekend and I was told that Leica is still working on the color profile of the new sensor and it's not quite ready yet.  The S3 should have more accurate and reliable AF performance. Hopefully, we will find that out soon.

That is exactly according to my information. They want to fix some major issues and perfect them. I guess it is a typical German behavior to try to make it 100%. On the website they corrected from spring 2019 to second half 2019. It will be out soon. For sure. They just needed extra time. And I guess this is a good sign that they want to have a very good product hitting the market recently.

Jan, I hope and believe you are right because I want the S system to thrive, like we all do.

@setuporg I bought the S007 just three months ago for a very good price at the Leica Store Berlin after working with an S2-P for 6 years and I'm very pleased. The S007 is an extremely versatile camera with great IQ in combination with S glass plus all the adaptable options. You will love the gorgeous OVF!

I have the honor personally knowing the person who was the technical manager for the S System until 2014 when he retired. He is still at the Leitz Park as a tour guide for vistors. And he is still in contact with this Departement.

I have seen very good deals for used Leica S bodies. I added myself a S006 with a replacement sensor to my S007.

So if you love optical viewfinders and if your are ok with the size of body and lenses I would think it is a good time to step in.

I assume when the S3 hits the market S007 prices will go further down a bit and lens prices stabilize a bit. Just my guess.
