Hi Nicci78

As I understand you are using a lot Leica M lenses for your Leica SL.
What experience do you have about using Leica M on Leica SL ?
Some lenses are definitely better off than others. I think for me it's not a retro look I'm looking for, but more modern.

I'm a huge Leica fan. With M (Lenses) as the foundation.

I have M-D and ME (m9) and TL2. But I think I will go over to SL2 and keep my M-D a little longer.

I think I get more out of SL(2) than buying the M10. M-D is somewhere all I look for in the M line. 🙂

My question is which M optics have you retained and which you think plays well/best with SL (2) in a future combine with SL/TL Lenses. I have also TL 35 (50mm) ny only autofocus lens ☺️ ?
Tanks a lot ☺️ 📷

The concern is with the compact wide angles  28/2.8, 24/2.8 and the like.  Jono reported that they didn't do well on the Panasonic S1, and I;'ve seen that they a poor match to the S1R.  But that doesn't answer for the SL2, which will certainly have thinner cover glass and maybe other tricks.  Sean Reid will probably have some answers in a month or two, I would guess.  If there is a Jono review on announcement day, look there first.

I don’t really think that you will get an answer to this of any value until the cameras are in the users’ and testers’ hands.

For what it’s worth, my SL plays well with the 21 Summilux-M ASPH, 28 Summilux-M ASPH, 50 Noctilux-M 0.95 and 75 Summilux - actually, better on the SL than on the M cameras I have.  I tend not to use the smaller M lenses on the SL as the handling isn’t as nice.  I don’t imagine that the SL2 will perform worse with these lenses.  Leica has issued the SL as a universal platform for its lenses, and that will remain its point of difference fromother L mount cameras.

If you do buy into the SL, can I suggest that you buy one or two SL lenses?  Going wider than the M sweet spot of 28mm makes sense (the 16-35 zoom is fabulous) and the 75 Summicron-SL is fantastic.

Good luck!

Thanks to Leica, I was invited to preview the SL2. Handled it. Unfortunately I cannot say things that I know except those that I do not know due to the signed NDA.

what I can say is Nov9 is the launch date and I should expect to get my camera on 21st Nov.

Well if you handled it and kept your pre-order that is a good sign.

I don't think the big modern designs (Summilux and Noctilux) have been problematic on the SL or should be on the SL2.  It's the compact lenses  that are a stretch.  Summicrons and Elmarit-asphs.  There's some room to debate whether sharp in the center and soft at the wides is good enough for the street, but that doesn't work for me.  That's what I keep an M for.

When the SL hit the streets, the stores were supposed to observe an embargo of a few weeks to keep early units int he stores for customers to see and fondle.  Thighslapper was sold one, and had to take it back.  Instead  he kept quiet for two weeks.  Something like that may be happening this time.  If it guarantees more early units, that's OK.

Same experience - plus: they work very well on the S1R too. And by the way – the 75 Noctilux is great on this 47 MP Sensor and very well balanced on S1R and SL.

FWIW I routinely use the 24mm Elmar-M on the SL.  Works beautifully and corner to corner sharp, nor are there any colour artefacts.

And of course the beauty of the M lenses are that they are actually reasonably sized, and being fully mechanical they will work for decades with minimal maintennance.  Cannot say the same for L lenses…

Could you tell us everything you don’t know. Just curious.

I guess with a completely different sensor with almost twice as many pixels all M-lenses, or at least all wide lenses, needs to be evaluated again before we really know how well they play with the new SL2.

Unless they specifically added offset microlenses and have a very thin cover glass like they do on the M sensors, I think it is pretty much a foregone conclusion that lenses that are more retrofocal will do better, while legacy wide angle lenses and largely symmetrical designs (like biogon type) will be rather poor in the edges compared to their maximum potential, while lenses that are more retrofocal will do better. So the 28mm Elmarit V. 3 might be better than the 28mm Summicron, the 35mm f1.4 FLE being better than the 50mm 1.4 Summilux ASPH, etc. Wide angle lenses like the 18mm Distagon and 24mm Biogon will possibly work, but give up a decent amount in sharpness compared to how they do on the M10. As for resolution, I think at optimal apertures the more recent and better M lenses will do just fine. You might not get the edge to edge sharpness of the 35mm SL Summicron at f2 with the 35mm FLE, but I bet by the time you are at 2.8 or 4 you will be pretty happy with the results as long as they are within the plane of focus.

Well, it's always been my suspicion that  the 21/24 Summiluxes were introduced in part as an excuse to make the designs more digital-friendly (i.e. more SLR-lens-like, telecentric). Make 'em large and long and more telecentric, and since they'll be big anyway, give 'em apertures of f/1.4.

Something Leica now does out in the open with the massive L-mount normal/wide lenses (and did previously with the tunnel-like 16-18-21 WATE).

Hahaa,...you’re sharp enough to pick that up.

I do not just take specificities at face value. But rather I always ask ‘what’ it does and ‘how much’ good it brings to the table.

Unfortunately because of NDA, I could not bring the camera for a real world shooting beyond the indoor venue (which I was really hopping for) although it was a one on one session I had and was provided the opportunity to ask as many questions I wanted to during the 60 minutes slot provided for me.

There will be another breakfast session to be arranged for a small group to meet a beta tester soon so more meaning information and questions can be exchanged.
