Great images and gear report. The M10 colours are very nice, indeed.

I have a similar travel setup, although of an earlier generation. Mine is the M9 with Zeiss 21 Biogon, Voigtlander 35 Nokton and 50 Summicron. Pocket camera is the Panasonic LX10, which is equivalent to a Sony RX100 V. I would like to be able to whittle it down to just one lens, but those three lenses give me the most versatility, from landscapes and architecture, to night shooting, to environmental portraits. The LX10 handles video, macro and general snapshots.

35 isn't quite wide enough for me as a general lens, as I like capturing context in travel images. 28 is better, 24/25 is great, and 21 is excellent. On my last trip, most images were shot with the 21, and about 35% with the 50. Could I travel with just the 21? Probably not, I'd want the Summicron or Zeiss Sonnar 50 for reach and rendering. How do you manage with just a 35?

Really enjoyed your post, thank you.  In prior travel, it was always lugging a heavy DSLR with a mix of lenses, have been trying to travel with less, and focus more on the photography.  I don't think I am down to 1 lens yet, but find the 50mm gets the most use in my travel / city photography thus far, with the 35mm coming in second.  Enjoyed your website as well, nice work!

John,

Thank you for your comments and for visiting my website. I'm working on adding portfolios from my "all Leica" trips since purchasing my first Leica, the M10, in November 2017.

If the SL2 is more compact and lighter than the S1/S1R, mounting the APO 50 Summicron-SL on it would still make this statement true IMO. And one would have the ability to crop a lot, not to speak of weather sealing, and AF.

Question: why not just the Q or Q2 then?

Well in my case it was because neither the Q or Q2 had been introduced at the time. Also I use other lenses for other locations at other times so a Q as well as an M is a little overkill (worth looking into though 🙂 ).

I've whittled my camera collection down to a M10-P and a 35 lux and don't feel the need for more. I find it liberating not having to worry about whether I've got the right lens mounted.

This is definitely my setup should i have no choice

Thank you, Bud, for this thread. So far this year I’ve only managed two trips. Portugal with an M9-P/90 Elmarit M (just not a wide angle guy!) and Canada with a Nikon Z7/24-70 f4. The Leica gave me about 30% more keepers! Admittedly the Nikon is much better with the 50 1.8, which I left at home - holy cow the thing is huge, and while I was hoping the zoom would give me more versatility, it actually didn’t work out that way.

Leica M’s rule!

Hi John.

Thank you for your comments.

My M10 and Summilux 35 is my goto camera. I recently bought a used SL with 24-90 lens from the Leica SoHo store in NYC. I also purchased the M lens adapter for the SL. The M primes are definitely sharper than the 24-90 zoom even though the zoom is the best zoom that I have ever owned. However, the weight and size is a killer for travel. I do enjoy shooting my Noctilux 50 f0.95 on the SL with using the M-adapter. The SL focus peaking is fantastic and increases the number of keeper that I get with this lens.

That said, I still love the shooting experience of the M10.

With my acquisition of the SL, I have sold off my entire previous system of choice for the past 5 years, the Fuji XT. I got enough for this system to almost replenish my bank account after purchasing the SL and 24-90.

Regards,
Bud James

With M lenses one can crop instead of zoom yielding more keepers, obviously.

Agree. If you can figure out the widest focal length you usually use, e.g if you have a normal zoom (e.g. a 24-70) on an SLR or mirrorless, you can choose that focal length for your standard M lens and then crop when needed. Plus possibly carrying a wider (compact) lens for those rare occasions you need a wider FOV. For me it's currently a 35 cron and a 21 sem, but for someone else it could be some other combination or even a single focal length.

I was in Nice/Nizza last week with 18mmEQ, 50mmEQ and 135mmEQ. The frequency of use was about 60%, 35%, 5%.

The camera is an APS with 24MB.

The personal of the public traffic came out on strike (one day). Of course taken with the Voigtländer 12mm.

In a few days I will be traveling on our one week autumn holiday. That's a perfect opportunity to try my new 50mm Summilux ASPH Black Chrome (purchased two days ago). I don't think I will carry any other lenses. That way I can really get it tested in all kinds of situations.

Lovely lens. I used it as my only lens for ten days in Italy last autumn.  Keep in mind that it's more contrasty than your other 50s but no doubt you will love it.  Enjoy your holiday.
