Kevin in Colo Posted August 19, 2019 Share #1 Posted August 19, 2019 Advertisement (gone after registration) I own a collapsible 50mm f/2.8 Elmar and a collapsible 90mm f/4 Elmar that need “proper” lens caps. I’m confused though on what Leica lens cap would fit well. I’ve seen some 39mm push on/over lens caps in aluminum and in chrome plated brass with red felt inside the outer edge, as well as some plastic Leica caps that say “42mm for 39mm filter size”. What would fit well? What did early 1960s lenses come with when new? What would you recommend? Thanks!

a.noctilux Posted August 19, 2019 Share #2 Posted August 19, 2019 Hello Kevin, Welcome here, A42 lens caps are variable in quality and "fit" including made by Leitz/Leica. For your Elmar 2.8/50mm (not Elmar-M of recent years), the best fit would be so called A42 push-on in aluminium ( like this link ) with felt inside. Welcome, dear visitor! The one from Elmar-M (item 14285 or 14321) would not fit well because the felt replaced by kind of slippy grooved plastic inside. I have also plastic A42 very common but it's not good idea because the plastic became hard over time and hard plastic without felt inside don't fit well and hard to cap/uncap. lct Posted August 19, 2019 Share #3 Posted August 19, 2019 +1 but i haven't got any problem with my black plastic push-on lenscaps 14268 i must say. The silver metal push-on lenscap used in the sixties was the ORQDO 14031. See pics below. Welcome, dear visitor! Michael Geschlecht Posted August 19, 2019 Share #5 Posted August 19, 2019 (edited) Hello Kevin, Welcome to the Forum. The first collapsible 90mm, F4, Elmar, which began production in 1954, came with an A42 metal cap with a brown Hungarian yak felt liner. Michael Geschlecht Posted August 19, 2019 Share #7 Posted August 19, 2019 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello JD, We all know that yaks come originally from the area in & around Tibet. But, like Kentucky Bluegrass, which is originally from Iraq. Or Sugar Cane, which is originally from New Guinea: Sometimes thing that are from somewhere else: End up in other places. Sort of like Potatos growing in Ireland & Germany when they originally are from Southern Chile. And we don't even have to write about all of those cows in Texas. Nice photo, by the way. Hello Kevin, It is softer than the red felt used with later lenses. And the color brown is the color of the lighter brown hair on the bottom of the left back leg of the Yak in JD's very nice photo. Michael Geschlecht Posted August 19, 2019 Share #12 Posted August 19, 2019 (edited) Hello LCT, Nice photo. If you look inside the lens caps of Leitz lenses from the 1960's or thereabouts you will see a red felt lining. More like a Christmas red than the pink that your guinea pig is wearing. I actually never saw a pink felt lining. Perhaps that is because guinea pigs might think that they need their pink clothing to be stylish & therefore they might be reluctant to give their pink clothes up. Michael Geschlecht Posted August 19, 2019 Share #14 Posted August 19, 2019 (edited) Hello LCT, Nice yak. I don't know where Christmas Red felt comes from. Christmas Red felt is pretty close to, but just a little darker than the red of the yak in your Post. I never saw a yak with red horns & red eyes before. PFM Posted August 23, 2019 Share #15 Posted August 23, 2019 The Leica Wiki shows the caps for the 90mm collapsible or rigid as 14321 in Silver Chrome, and 14285 in Black Chrome. For your 50/2.8, what was suggested above. PF
