Urushi Posted August 10, 2019 Share #1 Posted August 10, 2019 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have a Zeiss 35mm F2 Biogon and the more I use my M 240 the more I find myself reaching for smaller lenses. I don't want to lose any speed so I was thinking of the Voigtlander Ultron 35mm f2 ASPH. Are there other lenses I should consider? I would like to not spend more than $2,000 and I am okay with used lenses.
Advertisement Posted August 10, 2019 Posted August 10, 2019 Hi Urushi, Take a look here Smaller 35mm to Replace Zeiss 35mm f2 Biogon?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!

pedaes Posted August 10, 2019 Share #3 Posted August 10, 2019 You could try the Zeiss 35/2.8. According to Sean Reid much sharper than the 2.0, no focus shift and one of the best 35's he has ever tested. I know it is a stop slower but well worth considering, as smaller and f2 are a bit mutually exclusive.
TomB_tx Posted August 10, 2019 Share #4 Posted August 10, 2019 I used the Biogon f2 on my M9, but also felt it was too large. When I got an M10 I switched to a 2.5 35 Summarit, which is about the size of my 1971 35 Summicron, and I am very pleased with it - easily the equal of the Biogon, if slightly slower. The Ultron would probably be great, but I don't care for the mechanical design. I also have the Voigtlander 35 f1.4 Nokton II, and love the small size. It makes lovely pictures, but isn't as sharp as the Biogon. The 7-Artisans 35 f2 M mount is tiny, and is impressively sharp at f2, besides being so cheap it's worth a try. It uses a "ramp cam" design, and comes with instructions to calibrate the focus exactly to your camera. On my sample that works for one distance, but focus isn't quite perfect at different distances (slope of cam must not be perfect). However, the more I shoot with it I realize the performance is really very good, regardless. Might be worth a try for the low cost. I also have an earlier version in Sony E mount, where the EFV assures focus at all distances.
Jon Schick Posted August 10, 2019 Share #5 Posted August 10, 2019 I love the images from my 35/2.8 Biogon C and concur with the recommendation above. But I'd also seriously consider the new vintage styled Voigtlander Ultron 35/2. If my experience with its 21mm sibling is anything to judge by, it'll be a very nice lens. Photon42 Posted August 10, 2019 Share #6 Posted August 10, 2019 Obvious choice coming from the Biogon is the Summicron 35 ASPH. You should be able to get one in the indicated price range. The Biogon never needs a hood, so you may find that the difference in size to a hooded lens isn't all that large. The Biogon was my first M lens btw.
benqui Posted August 10, 2019 Share #7 Posted August 10, 2019 Advertisement (gone after registration) I use the 2.8/35 and it is really the "all purpose tool": small, compact, razor-sharp also at 2.
lct Posted August 11, 2019 Share #8 Posted August 11, 2019 Leica 35/2 asph v1's, CV 35/2's and ZM 35/2.8's user here. You can go wrong with none of them. To elaborate a bit more: - Leica 35/2 asph v1 (no experience with v2) is the better compromise but also the more expensive lens not surprisingly. - CV 35/2 is at least as sharp as the Leica. It is also smaller but its OoF rendition is somewhat sharper. - ZM 35/2.8 is almost perfect if you like contrasty lenses with only two flaws, vignetting and... f/2.8. Happy snaps
Guest Posted August 11, 2019 Share #9 Posted August 11, 2019 The 35mm Konica Hexanon UC is a tiny jewel and the best made lens I’ve ever used. Mint versions usually available online for around $2K. Why do you fancy that it's worthy of the premium, beyond its novelty?
low325 Posted August 11, 2019 Share #11 Posted August 11, 2019 The cbiogon is a serious contender. The “drawbacks” of it being f2.8 are minuscule.
Ko.Fe. Posted August 11, 2019 Share #12 Posted August 11, 2019 I often trying to read OP, before posting Classic Cron is still under 2K used. If you never tryied Leica lens, it might be interesting. 1
bayernfan Posted August 11, 2019 Share #13 Posted August 11, 2019 The Ultron 35/2 has some serious vignetting wide open as well as some swirl in out of focus areas. The Ultron 35/1.7 is not as small, but it's a gem in terms of optical performance. Both of these can be had used for around $600. At the $2000 price point, you can purchase a Summicron-ASPH v1 used. If you want to spend the money, get the Summicron. If you want to save some money, I'd suggest trying the Ultron 35/1.7.
Ccoppola82 Posted August 11, 2019 Share #14 Posted August 11, 2019 I have a few 35's and a lot of my favorite images come from the ugly duckling v3 summicron. It's tiny and very well built which check 2 boxes for me. The IQ is also a style I prefer (non asph). They come up for sale around 1200 sometimes. It's on my M2 almost all the time.

The 35 Summicron V2, 3, Asph should easily fall under $2k. The V1 and V4 are collectible and generally priced well over $2k for an excellent example. If you are prepared to lose a stop, the 35 2.8 Summaron, or for a more modern look, the 35 Elmarit M 2.5 or 2.4 would be my pick. I have the Summaron, but would like to try the Elmarit. Best of luck! 1
Urushi Posted August 11, 2019 Author Share #16 Posted August 11, 2019 What about the Voigtlander 35mm F1.4 II? This new version supposedly has improved optics and maybe less barrel distortion? For the price I really like this lens and being able to have 1.4f might be fun. If the lens is bad though I may just go for the 35mm f2 ultron. I definitely appreciate Leica lenses. The only one I have a 50mm F2.8 Elmar-M in silver chrome. It looks pretty and is fun to use but it isn't that much better than my other M mount lenses from Zeiss and Voigtlander.
pedaes Posted August 11, 2019 Share #17 Posted August 11, 2019 (edited) What about the Voigtlander 35mm F1.4 II? What about it ? Your original post asked about 'smaller' (than Biogon 2.0). Took time out to answer that question for you. You haven't thanked anyone who has taken trouble to answer your request. . ktmrider2 Posted August 11, 2019 Share #18 Posted August 11, 2019 Own a 35f2.8 C Biogon and 35f1.2 Nokton. The C Biogon comes with the highest recommendation. If you can live with the f2.8 aperture there is not a better lens out there!

Musotographer Posted August 11, 2019 Share #20 Posted August 11, 2019 I love my pre-asph Summilux 35 Titanium, very small if dense, which I bought a few months ago for £1500. Maybe I was lucky.
