Oh wow! 7?! I didn’t know there are this many variation of the APO 50! Which one is your favorite?

The titanium comes in a close second, but my favorite is the red one of course! The rarest and most valuable at 4-5 times it's original price.

What a most stupid initial question. Of course the most expensive lens is the best lens. There is no doubt about that if you understand nothing about nothing. I am very sorry about that openess.

I think that there is enough said.

Then I wonder if there are not much more expensive middle format cameras that the TO should consider? The Leica is just the poor man‘s tool.

Such an annoying thread.

Only if someone is stupid enough to pay that😡😡😡

Stupidity isn't rare and happens daily... Tho, I wouldn't necessarily call it stupidity. Perception of value is just different for everyone and for those few 40-50k isn't any "real" sum of money.

Peter Karbe, chief designer of the optical development department at Leica, swears by the aspheric Noctilux 1.2-50mm.
An optical dream although a manufacturing technical drama. But who can afford it and gets one...

My current favorite is the new olive-green Summicron 50mm "Safari".
Hopefully Leica still lets follow some other focal lengths in this olive drab.

Out of topic,

in cinema world, lenses are much much more expensive than our Leica M's (but I think they must sell well counting so many manufacturers)

came across this

Even not so impressive tech data of this Angenieux 24-290 (x12 zoom) and price is something else ...

Leica Thalia Set is not so expensive 😉

I'm happy that cinema production is not my hobby ...

Cinema makers are probably one of the very few creatives who cannot afford their own equipment. They rent and write off.

Puts has some recent comments on the performance of various 50mm M lenses...

He's also written several recent blog articles putting lens performance, and reviews, in the broader context of the current digital imaging pipeline, and where things seem to be headed.

More like the production rents it for them, but yes, no need to buy gear like that at a certain point when a rental kit suffices.

Most versatile is what you can easily bring.   Elmar M 2.8 is cool for me, but I enjoy the perfection of 50 2.0 APO and 50 Lux.

I think it probably also depends on what you shoot and where.

I have been working on a project for night images shot with an M7 and 50 Summilux. Technically it works great, but I now worry a lot when shooting, after witnessing a woman mugged by three men to steal her necklace. In the last month we have had two murders for robbery on the streets alongside us (Las Ramblas, Barcelona), and at the weekend an ambassador from Afghanistan was mugged for his watch. Leica cameras are among those targeted by the muggers and from what I have seen they attack violently and without warning from the outset.

So right now my “best” 50mm is my cheapest and least conspicuous - and it might yet be replaced with a beaten up Minolta 7s 😞

Las Ramblas has for many years been known as a grab and run site. When I was last there I was concerned about my M4, but basically didn't make an obvious showing of it except to actually shoot, and everything was just fine. But then I wasn't out on the street after 11pm either.

Yes. The problem is that they are not just grabbing and running now. In the street next to us a woman was stabbed in the neck so that her purse could be stolen. One man who was mugged for his watch was left with broken bones and internal haemorrhaging. A member of the South Korean consulate died of his injuries in hospital after an attempted robbery.

It feels more like when I shot in Brazil than Europe, and I am making similar equipment (and clothing) choices. The best lens (or camera) for me in these circumstances is very different from what I would choose for holiday snaps, portraiture or general travel. A shiny Noctilux might seem like a good choice for night photography, but in Barcelona right now you would be far better off with something that does not scream "loaded tourist".

Sad to hear this. Barcelona was one of the most wonderful cities I've ever visited, but I'd guess this is something that can happen with a lot of tourists in any major city especially at late nights.
