Trying to follow up on Tom0511 very insightful comments,  I would agree that XCD are "sharper" than many Leica M lenses of similar focal length. But rendering is not as good, other than the 65mm. For example, I prefer the look of my Elmarit-M 24mm ASPH to my "sharper" XCD 30mm. But the deciding factor for me has been the exceptional color and plasticity of the XCD files. M files are very good, but the XCD files are just a cut above....  often, no changes to color or levels are needed on the RAW, but just a tweak of shadows or EV depending upon where you selected the exposure setting.

Are you saying the 65mm renders smoother than the 90 or 45? This is very interesting (I dont own the 65) (yet?)

Thank you, understood now. So it affects only the wide open shooting, looked at the flickr pictures and not many pictures have bad looking out focus areas.

THe good thing is that the wide open aparture of the 90 is a f-stop which works quite well for me in regards to have a DOF not too shallow and not too deep.

You're in for a treat then.

I certainly prefer it to the 45. But I'm biased to the 50mm focal length (equiv). The 65 is both sharper and draws better than the 45 and ( I think) the 90. Although the 90 is great as well. Be warned that the 65 is significantly heavier than the 45 though.

And if you don't want to spend money don't even look at the 80mm. haha.

Yes, my 65mm is superior in every way to the (early) 45mm XCD I sold long ago. Close focus is excellent, colors are vivid and central sharpness/ micro contrast are equal to Leica APO 50 I think. I just shoot the 65mm XCD wide open, unless closer than 1m.

The 65mm renders more smoothly than the 90mm XCD, and organic shapes pop out naturally. To me, shapes come out as nicely as a Noctilux 50/1, but of course much much more crisply. In Leicaspeak, I would say the 65mm XCD flows like a Mandler lens, whereas the 30mm and 90mm have that hardness apparent in many of the Karbe team lenses.

Have you shot much with the HasseNoct? Can you compare its characteristics to the other XCD lenses?

Did you have to work out for a few months before taking it out for a shoot?

then 65 is definitely nicer than the 45, but the 45 is a really good lens too and for its size/weight is a useful lens for single camera walkabout (at least for me)

Panasonic, Fujifilm, Sigma, Hasselblad etc have all released cameras and now Sony blows things apart again with a 61MP camera, and we wait to see what leica will do with the SL, there must be some clear air for a couple months now to announce...….something, anything, even a vegan snakeskin version of the SL would be interesting to look at

indeed .. X1D Mkii looks delayed (I heard that from two different sources yesterday) SL2 is nowhere to be seen so if one is after the latest and most technically advanced, this is not good

that said I think both the original SL and X1D are still relevant cameras today and great to use. Lenses are wonderful on both of them.

I have the Mkii on order and was hoping to have it for travel/landscape in August and September but if not will just bring the SL as a back up and be it

I am in no hurry to upgrade
