NigelG Posted May 1, 2019 Share #1 Posted May 1, 2019 Advertisement (gone after registration) My 11-23 took an unscheduled 2 foot trip from my hotel bed to the carpeted floor while I was getting set for today in Monument Valley. The result was the mount sheared off exposing maybe only 3 screws holding the lens assembly to a plastic ring inside the mount. Has anyone else ever experienced this on one of the TL zooms or any idea how fixable it will be? (The zoom/lens assembly mechanism seems ok) Obviously I’m now stuck in Arizona 5 days into a 14 day hiking/photo trip without the lens (my only TL mount and only proper wide) so I’ll have to hike with an M and 28/50 and forego the wide end (with a 21SEM sitting useless back in London.....🙄). MDCT Posted May 1, 2019 Share #3 Posted May 1, 2019 OUCH! It should be totally fixable. Unfortunately probably won't be cheap. My 11-23 had a failed electronics board. Leica US had to send it to Germany. It took 2 1/2 months to get fixed. It was totally worth fixing because it is one of my favorite lenses.
bags27 Posted May 1, 2019 Share #4 Posted May 1, 2019 wow, I am so very sorry. I imagine as frustrating as it must be that the lens isn't very sturdy is the fact that there will be a lot of scenes where you'll be saying "if only I had..." I've read reports of cameras/lenses surviving amazing falls and ones where the least bump is destructive. really sorry.

frame-it Posted May 1, 2019 Share #6 Posted May 1, 2019 (edited) 2 foot drop on a carpet & the inner plastic looks torn off..seems to be really cheap quality as far as the build is concerned Edited May 1, 2019 by frame-it
gbealnz Posted May 1, 2019 Share #7 Posted May 1, 2019 Advertisement (gone after registration) Agreed with the less than stellar looking quality, but right now you're without a lens. Can you find a tech, any sort of tech, who can "re-glue" it, even temporarily? Once home, get it repaired, but if you can cobble it together, a bit of super-glue even, well maybe it will work? NigelG Posted May 1, 2019 Author Share #8 Posted May 1, 2019 (edited) Thanks all for your thoughts/suggestions. I’m resigned to not having it available and a long wait when back in Europe. I thought about trying to effect a temporary repair but even if I can glue it in some kind of mechanically/optically correct alignment there’s a detached ribbon cable and another shorn wire that need to go somewhere..... I’m pretty much in the middle of nowhere when it comes to techs/repairs. It’s somewhat frustrating to realise that the aluminium exterior barrel and metal mount are compromised by plastic interior components at a critical point (assuming that’s not aluminium that sheared....I didn’t investigate too far as we were heading out.) Oh well - probably be the only one hiking the Grand Canyon tomorrow with an M... Edited May 1, 2019 by NigelG
hoppyman Posted May 1, 2019 Share #9 Posted May 1, 2019 (edited) OUCH! not a nice feeling at all. Seems to have landed at exactly the wrong angle to shear across those weak points. In the second image it looks like one metal screw itself inside the mount has sheared on impact as well. I hope that it all gets fixed as quickly as possible for you when you are home. Dave in Wales Posted May 1, 2019 Share #10 Posted May 1, 2019 (edited) What a bummer, and so far from home. Until two weeks ago my knowledge of Leica cold be written on a pin head. What I thought I knew however, was that they were the very best of cameras/lenses. I'm not overly impressed, I must admit, considering what they cost. I come to Leica from Olympus, there was a big hoo-har when the mount of their first flag-ship Pro lens, the 12-40, dropped off. But hey, that's Oly this is Leica and about £500 difference in price. I blame Panasonic.... Edited May 1, 2019 by Dave in Wales
LocalHero1953 Posted May 1, 2019 Share #11 Posted May 1, 2019 I threw my Apo-Summicron-M 75 onto the cobbles outside Parma Cathedral a few years ago. The focus mechanism jammed, aside from abrasions/dents, and I guess there was invisible damage as well. Leica repaired it to like new condition, so yes, I expect them to be able to repair this. Mine took around 2 months. Will your home insurance policy cover this accidental damage?

My 18-56, when a few weeks old, failed electronically. Leica sent me a new lens within a week. @ the OP: Was the lens attached to the body? That can generate quite a bit of force if it strikes the floor unluckily. I hope that you carry insurance. BTW, just glueing it cannot work. The electrical connections are broken. NigelG Posted May 1, 2019 Author Share #13 Posted May 1, 2019 I had another look and the electrical connections are definitely kaput so there would be no aperture control etc even if it was manually focussed. I’d be worried anyway about subsequently damaging the TL2. My household insurance does cover it but I will wait to see what Leica’s estimate is before going that route as premiums mysteriously rise after claims (cough) and it’s an expensive policy to cover art etc in 2 properties and an increase might cost more in time... Lessons learnt - never put gear near the edge of a bed + always bring 2 cameras
danielfrimley Posted May 1, 2019 Share #14 Posted May 1, 2019 (edited) Bit like closing the door after the horse has bolted but you (or anyone else in the UK, for this company anyway) may wish to look into specialist insurance. I have a policy with Assetsure which provides worldwide all-risks cover, including theft from an unattended vehicle, and a policy wording that isn't "War and Peace" in Arial 6 point. For my CL camera, 23mm, 35mm and 60mm TL lenses it works out less than £15 a month all in with equipment hire. Admittedly, I've not made a claim so can't speak to that side of things but their customer service so far has been excellent. If you switch to a competitor product you may come out ahead! 😉
JayBird Posted May 3, 2019 Share #16 Posted May 3, 2019 Sorry to hear that. That whole region, while extremely remote, is spectacular. I have been twice and still want to go back. The 28 on the M should be plenty wide. I did Monument Valley with a 17-55DX (same FOV as 27 mm full frame) on my Nikon D7100. Most of the shots were at the 17 mm end. It worked well. Hopefully the accident does not ruin the trip for you. I would recommend going to Valley of the Gods and Mexican Hat if you head north. By the way, the closest Leica shop for you is going to be in Las Vegas.
Marac Posted May 3, 2019 Share #17 Posted May 3, 2019 Horrible!... Obviously you should send it to Leica for repair. I'm a bit of a bodger/repair man so I can see that the connecter seems complete and has just disconnected from the mount. I think it could be put back together with some Araldite and a steady hand, interesting. So sorry this happened to you, to be honest, it looks a bit tacky and cheap inside there, not what one would expect from Leica really, I'm disappointed.. Seeing stuff like this really makes me consider switching back to the M system, not much difference weight-wise just the rangefinder focussing kills me these days. Hopefully it all works out well for you.

LeicaS2 Posted May 3, 2019 Share #20 Posted May 3, 2019 My CL with 11-23 dropped four feet onto a wood floor and walked away with no damage. So it probably depends on what angle it hits on.
