FHPdoc Posted April 2, 2019 Share #1 Posted April 2, 2019 Advertisement (gone after registration) For anyone interested, I both splurged and gambled by ordering the Thorsten Overgaard Q lens hood for my Q2... It fits! (I wasn't sure because of the slightly bigger lens due to the weather-proofing, and I couldn't find where anyone else had already verified compatibility.) I didn't want to have to remove the native Q2 hood to put on/take off a polarizer when needed, plus the native hood makes dialing in a circular polarizer difficult--thus the Overgaard hood. Comes in three colors--black, silver, or red--and arrived from China in just a few days. So, in case any of you were thinking about ordering one, no need to fear incompatibility!

leicamario Posted April 3, 2019 Share #4 Posted April 3, 2019 What’s the improvement with a ventilated lend hood over a normal one?

Comes in the box shown, wrapped in the microfiber cloth, with accompanying replacement 49mm cap. Removed native hood and cap also shown. Also, just got my completely refurbished/CLAed M3 with 50mm f/2 DR Summicron back from Gus Lazzari--almost new now and in BEAUTIFUL shape: I think this will be the extent of my Leica acquisitions... 2
 Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! HighlandK Posted April 4, 2019 Share #8 Posted April 4, 2019 While it is a looker - largely because it is very distinctive - and I can see the benefit of enabling a polariser to be turned more easily does anyone know whether it performs better or worse than the leica default at doing what lens hoods are meant to do: shield the lens from the sun? In terms of the secondary function of protecting the lens glass from stray contact with undesirable objects I suspect it performs worse.
rfunnell Posted April 6, 2019 Share #9 Posted April 6, 2019 I have also recently purchased my ventilated hood from Thorsten von Overgaard and am very impressed with it. Main reason as above to use my polariser and it's nice to have a different style to everyone else with the hood. I purchased the black option and can highly recommend it. Thanks to Thorsten for his efforts.
leicamario Posted April 6, 2019 Share #10 Posted April 6, 2019 „highly impressed“ -> „use my polarizer“ what do I miss here... what is so impressive? help me out please
rfunnell Posted April 6, 2019 Share #11 Posted April 6, 2019 I found turning the polarising filter was not possible with the original hood on and with the vented hood there is access to the filter.
Mark Lyka Posted April 7, 2019 Share #12 Posted April 7, 2019 (edited) Filter access indeed easier, but I think a design opportunity was missed. The Q doesn't sit flat on it's base, it tips forward. The ventilated hood tips it backwards. Somewhere on the invisible line of what this hood blocks and what the original hood blocks there has to be a sweet spot that gives a bottom edge that would support the camera flat on its bottom. Willard McCarty Posted August 31, 2019 Share #13 Posted August 31, 2019 How long did those who have the Overgaard Q2 hood have to wait for it?
rpittal Posted August 31, 2019 Share #14 Posted August 31, 2019 Hello Willard: I just received 2 (for Noct f/1 and 28/1.4). It took a few weeks to receive them after ordering (listed as in stock). Coming out of Hong Kong, so current situation must make it difficult for businesses, although past orders have seemed to take about the same time. I really like the one I have for my Q1 also. Worth the wait and very well made.
Viv Posted August 31, 2019 Share #15 Posted August 31, 2019 I understand the usefulness of a slotted hood on a rangefinder camera. I don't see the point of it on the Q.

Siriusone59 Posted August 31, 2019 Share #19 Posted August 31, 2019 Hmmm....maybe the ventilation keeps the auto focus from overheating...🤔 Just kidding, it looks nice...but don't put one on that M3...it's perfect the way it is. 👍

One of his selling points is that the Q2 can be placed on a table on the hood, with lens facing into the table. Not sure I'd feel comfortable doing that, but he does it all over the place in his videos.
