Well the mount is identical of course and designed with the intention of compatibility with full frame from the start. I just put the summicron 23 on the SL to compare and the camera just seamlessly adjusted to the APS-C crop, displaying that indication instead of 35mm in the viewfinder too.

i have in mind going the other way when the new Summicron 35 becomes available. Getting it for the SL while it should be amazing on the CL too

Thank you both. I hadn't considered that the CL lenses would only use a portion of the SL sensor. I've been contemplating getting into the SL system and was thinking I might get by with my CL lenses. While they would work, it's clear from what you've told me that I'd need the SL lenses right away.

Cheers!

Brent,

Visited your website and looked at the nature/flower photos, just awesome. Very nice work indeed.

Can you tell us what camera and lens you were using to take them?

Thanks,

Robert

Thanks very much, Robert. The photos were taken over a period of several years with a variety of Leica cameras. I've owned all of the Digilux line and currently have the D109. The macro function on all of them has been excellent. l also used the M8 and M240 with various lenses, most often with the Noctilux which I enjoy for its ability to isolate a flower from the background.

Thanks again for taking the time to look.

Cheers,

Brent

If you are okay with the 10mp limitation, the T/TL lenses are terrific on the SL.  Particularly, the 35 1.4 TL and 60 2.8 macro are outstanding, and offer smaller, lighter options for the SL. But, the zoom options are no slouches either.

The first three below were taken with the SL and 60mm TL

The last two were taken with the SL and 55-135mm T zoom

I invested in some TL lenses before the cL had come out, and used them with my SL for video, but I also checked out their still capability.  Here's an example with the humble 18-55:

Are the CL/TL-Lenses indeed limited to 10mp resolution? So, it wouldn't make sense buying those lenses for the SL2-S I guess.

Yes. They only cover the smaller APS-C sized area of the sensor. On the low resolution SL2S that means 10mp. On the higher resolution SL2 that is still only around 20mp. 10mp is fine for the web and will print ok up to 40x60cm (slightly stretched), but if you are ok with that, then it works natively.

I was also under the impression that the lenses had to have their firmware updated to be used on an SL? And that this update could only be done using a CL or TL camera body?

Have been researching using thse lenses for video to make a compact SL rig - but the firmware issue has cooled my interest =/

While that may be true, the CL & TL bodies are becoming so cheap you could purchase one just for updates and still be dollars ahead of the others more expensive lenses.

These lenses produce excellent results on the SL2 and are light weight and compact. I love mine!
