So many times I have gone into a shop with no intention of a purchase, only to purchase.  If you don't go in they don't have any chance of possibly making a sale.

One store would charge me tax when I could mail order and purchase non taxed, when I mentioned this to the sales person they were happy to give me a credit equivalent to the tax for goods in the store.

I am not heavy handed in my approach, many times I purchase at the local store despite higher cost, I want the store to stay in business otherwise there won't be any local camera stores.

if video is of any interest to you, SL is certainly a better option than CL. SL does 4K on a Super35 (a.k.a APS-C) frame size, so your TL lenses will work for video just fine. For photography not so much, as you won't be able to see what SL is truly capable of. R lenses are fine, but keep in mind that most R zooms are not as good as many people think they are. A notable exception is 4/35-70 and perhaps the zoom that you already have. SL primes are super expensive, yet I haven't seen better AF full-frame lenses ever.

The good news is, now Panasonic and Sigma are entering the scene with their L-mount offerings, and it only a matter of time until we see some very high quality optics.

I got into Leica for the glass

Leica glass keeps me in the system.  Despite the accolades heaped on other manufacturers newly released lenses Leica continues to outperform.

A related dilemma: go from M240 to SL, or add SL to M240, or forget SL? The argument for a used SL if any is a good one. My problem is that I feel I should try the SL, something I've never done. Am I comfortable with the size in the hand, even using adapted M lenses? Is manual focus with the magnified viewfinder an improvement for me over the rangefinder method? It feels sleazy to go into a camera shop and try out the SL knowing that if I decide to get one, it would be used from a private party, not from the store. (Some stores have used cameras, but not quite as cheap - and the sales tax is large here.) And the price of a rental is a steep increment to the cost.

I owned an M9 and a Nikon D810. 18 months ago I was in a quandary - loved the Leica look and the lenses, hated the Nikon green tinge OOC. But if I was to buy another camera it would have had to have been something which would at least match the D810 (not pixel count - I'm not impressed by mere pixels) and allow me to use my M lenses. I bought a second hand mint SL, sold the D810. Heaven. No more menu diving, beautiful pictures out of camera, what could go wrong? Actually my eyes are too old for manual lenses at events, so I bought the 24-90. Now we're talking, though I'm quite a way into this financially ☹️. In fact, I'm so impressed with Leica's mirrorless approach I make my second camera a Q. I love the Q - I've never met anyone who actually uses one that doesn't love it. Now I'm in deeper. Obviously what I should do is sell the M9... except who in their right mind would sell an M9 in perfect working order (twice replaced sensor under the Leica replacement scheme)?  Now I have a shelf full of Leicas including an M9 which doesn't leave the house. But I've a feeling that if I sold it I'd need itI'd regret it. I've had this experience before with a perfect M6.

Don't dismiss the idea of buying a used SL from a Leica dealer. I bought mine from one in London. I don't know what work the camera had done before I bought it but I would characterise it as 'not much', while a good Leica dealer will stand behind the stuff they sell. So you actually are getting more for your money.
