P.S. as a 35mm Pre asph summilux expert, you should have recognized the signature wide open glow on the mountain shot 😂 😉

I did. But I wanted to be sure, that's why I asked you!

Since our last talk, I’ve tried many more batches of the summilux Pre asph. I now know for (almost) sure, that the infinity lock on the V2 changed from brass to aluminum during batch 222. At the same moment, the coating has changed. I still have a preference for the older coating.

That's interesting. Is there a visible difference in the colour of the coating, or do they look the same?

I have my v2 infinity lock version in my hand now and the coating looks violet/blue, with shades of yellow/orange behind it.

This reminds me it’s a tricky lens, and to remember to stop down.  “Leica glow” is all very well, but for me, this image would go straight into the dustbin.  The highlights are close to blown, and I see no benefit in soft landscapes.  I can’t recall seeing a soft landscape which didn’t make me think it was either poorly focussed or a poor lens.

There are other situations where there are benefits to a soft image, but this isn’t one of them.

My V2 (S//N 222xxxxx) also has the same violet/blue coating look.

Oh, b*@@£7. I've just bought a M4, as a first foray back into 35mm film since 2011, to be used when I'm in an analogue frame of mind. I sold off all my M lenses except the Thambar a few years back, so spent yesterday picking just one small lens to acquire to keep on the body: I narrowed it to 35mm, then to Summicron or Summilux (I've had a Summaron 3.5cm/2.8 and a Summicron v4 before), then to Summilux, and finally to the pre-asph. The next step is to check the market - and I find that everyone else likes this lens so much that the prices are higher than the cost of the camera.

Back in your shoes I would seek out (another) 35/2.8 Summaron, or a 35/2.5 or 2.4 Summarit.

I just have the Summaron, but I’d consider a Summarit based on value over collectibility.

Thank you - both are still options, but I wanted the extra 1-2 stops.

I am surprised that this your copy still gives that dreamy look at F2.8. Or did you add that dreamy look in post? My friend's Summilux 35 pre-asph is tack sharp at F2.8, and bitingly sharp from F4 onwards.

Well, I see a dreamy, unsharp look at F2.8 in your above photos, that's why I asked. Normally, this lens should be plenty sharp at F2.8

Was there any difference in the optical layout between v1 and v2? I was under the impression that there were only mechanical differences between v1 and v2.

I see more flare on v1 pics and some more softness too but i have no experience with this version that i never bought for this reason.

The coating on v2 lenses may have been improved to some extent (and certainly over time, as v2 was produced for a very long time), but I believe the optical computation was the same.

The same glass has not been used during the long life of this lens if i remember well but i may be wrong. All i can say is v1 looks softer with more flare than v2 on the pics i've seen, including in this very thread, but again i have no experience with v1.
