Please find a draft of the rules attached. Since we allow to schedule the two-hour phase until Sunday while announcement of equipment can be done offline, I added a point that pictures for the competition should be taken in NYC.

Does this make sense? Since I'm no native speaker, the English might need some correction as well :)

Sefan, your Challenge Rules summary is fine and concise. Thank you.

I have now booked flights to NY via Hong Kong (stop over in both directions) arriving NY May 2, departing May 7.

NY accommodation is booked at Hotel Pennsylvania for those dates.

I skip the obvious line about holding the compass upside down* but can see the point of a detour and stop-over in Hong Kong, one of the best places to eat out on the planet :)

Which compass are you using John? HK is west from you but NY is east. At least both are north from you. :)

I guess Cathay Pacific beats Qantas for price and comfort?

Ravi, you may remember "that compass" I bequeathed to Pete (Farnz). It is the greatest aid to making good pics ever. When I used it, I always ended up in strange places! A requirement for unusual pics. Have you noticed that since taking over the compass, Pete's photography has skyrocketed? 😎

We're at the same hotel which is real convenient because if I remember correctly it's your round.

Cheers, Tom

I remember it well from Venice - it led us the wrong way for so long that when we arrived at the meeting point, the light was perfect.

Gentle reminder - is there anyone else who plans to join the café to start the challenge, the dinner or both? It would be good to have an overview to find suitable space in a café at noon and a restaurant in the evening, so even a "maybe" would be helpful. A notification by PM is also possible.

We are currently scouting for a ballpark number of 50 USD plus alcoholics for dinner, is everyone fine with this budget?

Thanks a lot

Yes fine with me, Stefan.

(Please pardon me for the slight correction but it should read "plus alcohol" or "plus alcoholic drinks".  "Alcoholics" are those unfortunate people who are addicted to alcohol.)

Pete.

Okay by me Sefan. Don't know Pete, maybe he has got it right, seems like your description hits the nail.

Looking forward to it. Since I’ll be in New York with the family for a couple of days beforehand they want to do some of the touristy things. Does anyone have experience with buying tickets and the best way of doing this? I see some of the options such as New York City Pass, but I’m not sure whether they represent good value or not? Sure if you visit ‘everything’ they do, but they seem to be a bit over enthusiastic with the number of places they expect you to be able to visit in a day.... Or are we better to just buy tickets when we arrive at each place (thinking of things like Empire State, Statue of Liberty etc).

The first time I visited, I bought the City Pass, I think it is a good deal, if most of the sights are planned to be visited. As an additional upside, most of the attractions require to queue twice, once for the ticket an the second time for access. With the City Pass, the first queue can be avoided.

Since queueing is life-time wasted*, I would even consider it, if I would spend slightly more.

Stefan

* I remember standing in a queue for a public toilet/restroom in Rome (One Challenge 2017) after having bought tickets. After some time, we decided we were wasting lifetime, donated our tickets to others, went to the next café, had an espresso each and used the facilities there. As an ironic twist, an espresso did cost exactly the same as the first tickets...

I've never bought a City Pass, as you say, they generally cover far more than you want to visit. However, I do plan my visits and buy tickets online ahead of time. As mentioned above this will avoid one queue on the day, also in some cases it is essential, unfortunately if you wanted to get into the Statue of Liberty tickets are already sold out through May 7th, you can still get on the island, but not into the statue.
