How about visiting this: https://www.nederlandsfotomuseum.nl/en/exhibition/shadows-alfredo-jaar/ ?
Koen Wessing actually was a Leica user too.

Anyway, if you want I might be able to organise a guided tour in the museum.

Shadows is a sacral exhibition that is a tribute of Alfredo Jaar to the work of Wsessing. That is magnificent.

So this is promising!

I am sorry but I will have to drop out of this meeting.

Long story. My trip to Malaysia and India are delayed from starting this week to starting on 6 March and I will fly home at the weekend of this meeting. I will be too tired to join you.

Viel Spass, good luck and

May The Light Be With You (MTLBWY)!

Hi Sandokan, Have a nice trip. Do post a delightful picture from the other end of the globe. 🤔

The one with most light will be Jaap who will be taking snow pictures (Jaap - be sure to post one).

Hi, Albert,

March 30th is the end of the financial year at work so everything goes crazy as projects try desperately to complete works before funding runs out.  I've tried my best to avoid being drawn into the frenzy but unfortunately I have unwillingly been sucked into it and must now with great regret withdraw from the Rotterdam meet up.  I hope it all goes very smoothly, everyone has a wonderful time and the weather is kind to you.  It's such a shame because I was really looking forward to the meet up.

Pete.

That's a real shame Pete, I was really looking forward to your visit. Until a next time, still not mentioning the B. word. .

Well, I think that the real reason is that Pete is afraid he can't return in time 😱

and I said it without the B-word either 😅

anyway, happy working.

If I couldn't get back in time before the B word then I'd have to stay and become a Netherlander and I would really like that! 😃  I was hoping to spend a day or two in Delft too so I'll have to leave that for another time.

Pete.

  • 2 weeks later...

Just wanted to forewarn you that there is some doubt as to whether Eileen and I will be able to make the meeting. Problem is that my elderly Aunt has just been taken into hospital and things don't look too good. Depending on how she progresses over the next couple of weeks will determine if we are able to travel.

Can you let me know when you need final figures for the meal so that I can make a decision.

Be sorry to miss it as we've enjoyed the last couple of meetings in Holland.

Best regards, Tom

Sorry to hear this, Tom. May our thoughts be with you.

No worry as to the dinner, I will ask in about ten days. They can accomodate well. It is a restaurant favoured by the Rotterdam inner crowd and the Kralingen 'harbour barons' as they are called here in town 😋

I have the reservation for the restaurant now for 15 persons. There is some room to accomodate for them, but I would like to know who is staying for dinner by Friday 15th so I can inform De Pijp.

Also I will take this as number for the boat ride.

I walked the tour again today.

Last week I met with Michiel Fokkema who has organised a guided tour for us through the Photography Museum on the 23rd from 2:00 to 3:00. The tour will be in English and it will take an hour.

The current exhibition bij Alfredo Jaar/ Koen Wessing is interesting. Wessing has a statement in the hall.

"It is important that pictures are timeless."

[Hard to translate because to me it is also jargon from the academy.]

After this exhibition the tour will be changed a little bit - have tea elsewhere (the NHow coffeeshop in De Rotterdamcan't easily cater for a group they told me today) and  across the bridge we will walk through the Museum Park, as a nice route to go to the restaurant and arrive such to be able to order around 18:00.

I switched the restaurant because restaurants only have à la carte below 20 persons, making it fairly expensive, something I do not want to be blamed for 😅.

Important: We like to commence at 10:00 at Blaak with the coffee etc in order to be in time at lunch in Hotel New York. So slightly earlier.

I will lay out the route again and insert some marked meeting moments where we should be or wait for each other.

Overview

Architecture is a key for a visit of the city. We will walk through areas that have been developed the last twenty years and that have given the city its high ranking in city guides as a place to visit.

10:00 Meet and greet in Martcafé in the Markthal next to the Blaak Metro station. This is in the right corner of the Markthal.

10:45 Look at the Markthal from the inside and outside. Walk via the Kubuswoningen and the Wijnhaven to the Leuvehaven (point # 47) where the Watertaxi boat will be waiting.

11:30 Take the [large] Watertaxi for a small cruise of half an hour up and down the river and disembark at Hotel New York.

12:15 - 13:45 Lunch at Hotel New York right at the end of the Wilhelmina Pier. (Koninginnenhoofd 1, 3072 AD Rotterdam)

13:45 Stroll around and go to the Photography Museum (Nederlands Fotomuseum, Las Palmas, Wilhelminakade 332, 3072 AR Rotterdam)

14:00 till 15:00 Guided tour in English through the museum and the current exhibitions

15:00 Continue our stroll and have tea break at LantarenVenster (Otto Reuchlinweg 996, 3072 MD Rotterdam)

16:00 Walk across the Erasmusbrug, go left along the waterfront, then right to cross over to the Museum park and walk right through the Kunsthal. Go past the new building for the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen. Next through the street with two small museums: Chabot (Museumpark 11) and Huis Sonneveld (Jongkindstraat 12). These two close at 16:30 and 17:00 so we have no time to enter.

17:30 Pass along the Eendrachtsplein Metro station to enter the Nieuwe Binnenweg. The restaurant is in a street on the right and opens its doors at 17:30.

18:00 - 20:00 have dinner at Bierhal De Pijp, Gaffelstraat

How to get there in the morning

The Markthal with its famous horse-shoe form is just aside the Blaak metro/train station. For those with a car, you can either park in a parking garage around the corner or best take your car to the P&R at Kralingse Zoom and take the metro to Blaak (parking is free there when you park and continue with the metro). The Blaak train station can be reached too from Rotterdam Central Station.

And in the evening

From the Eendrachtsplein you can easily reach the Central Station by tramway or go with the metro to your point of departure.
