I did a small trial yesterday, and yes, it works. The tracking itself is even pretty decent. However, it is too slow locking on the subject, and too imprecise. Locking on something moving won't work in over 50% of the cases, and it is very difficult to get it to lock on a bird about to take off instead of the streetlight it is sitting on. For the time being I'll stick to multipoint or manual focus.

Maybe Leica can tweak it in a future firmware update.

Yes, I like the second one best too. However, they were not taken for any artistic or technical merit, just to see if I could get focus; there was a lot of wind and these gulls were moving pretty fast :)

It may not miss a trick, but I have no interest in that camera nor is focus tracking of great importance to my photography. ;)

This forum, and my post, are about the CL anyway.

Using the CL with the 35mm Lux, I'd say focus tracking works in a pinch, but it certainly doesn't inspire confidence. I'd over-shoot in the hope of getting a keeper. That said, I agree with @Jaap, Leica is purpose-built for a slower, more deliberate form of photography - even with the CL's autofocus.

I have a 4 year old son, and when he's running around at the playground, that's what my Sony is purpose-built to capture.

Jaap, I have been trying the focus tracking recently. For me, it works quite well for street photography and I don’t know why I haven’t used it before. The only thing that bothers me - and we have talked about it in another thread - is the focussing area. If only it could go back to the center after each shot, it could really speed up my shooting. Now, I have to make sure where that little square is after each shot; it takes time and depending on the light, I can’t even find it.

Louis, curious which lens you're using. The only AF lens I have is the TL 35 Lux, and listening to it trying to track focus sounds like me running up a steep hill - we're both huffing and puffing, gasping for breath.

The only native/Leica lens I have is 18-56. Although slow, it is an excellent lens. I gave the focus tracking a try about a week ago (I was never sure about it before!) and I really liked it. Now, it is set on my every day shooting. It works really good for my type of shooting. But as I mentioned before, that focus point is driving me crazy!

Thanks, Louis - good to know. I'm sending you happy firmware karma!  It's an obvious fix that would benefit nearly all Leica shooters.

I have never been a big fan of focus tracking. It is supposed to be good on my Nikon D7100. But I have had very limited success with it. But as I do not do much in the way of BIF, I do not worry about it.

I like #2 best too.

I tried focus tracking a lot with SL90/2 . It works quite well especially with highest mode. Imo single point focus works better than face detections. It’s not accorate as af-s nikkors on DSLR but works. I tested it on my children .
