I take it this is a question about what you take with you when you travel, not what's sitting in a Pelican case at home? The M8 adds a lot of parts compared to taking a couple of film cameras, but the overall weight ends up about the same.

For some time, it's always the same bag, a Crumpler Tall-E. It's not big but it's great for hiking and biking (it has a stabilizer strap to keep it centered on your lower back) - and it holds a lot of stuff but not enough to get heavy. It's also excellent at resisting dust and water entry. This is the one for the road to Fish River Canyon.

For the M8 and two weeks middle of nowhere (not all of this gets carried around once I get there!):

Top flap: micro USB reader for SD and extension cord

Main compartment:

  • Leica M8 with Poon magnifier
  • 21mm Kobalux
  • 35mm Summilux ASPH
  • 75 Summilux (or 90mm Hexanon)

Bottom:

  • 2 Gepe waterproof cases with 8 2gb Sandisk Ultra II cards
  • Aleratec Copy Cruiser USB card/USB copier (or Sima Hitch USB copier)
  • Tiny Giotto rocket blower
  • Konica HX-18 compact automatic flash.
  • Hexar RF body and two rolls of film (optional)

Bottom compartment mid flap (in elastic loops):

  • 8 Kingston Data Traveler 2 gb USB drives with a zip tie running across the top
  • Giotto lens brush
  • Lens pen

Bottom compartment outer flap:

  • 6 extra M8 batteries (Leica AC brick is in my suitcase - unlikely to be needed!)

Other combinations/places for this bag:

  • Fuji GSW690III, Hexar AF, Sekonic L-358 (Turkey)
  • Fuji GA645, Hexar AF (most of Europe)
  • Nikon D2x with 24/2.8 AF-D, Fuji GA645zi (SA and Namibia)
  • Kodak DCS Pro 14n, 28/1.4, 105/2 DC, SB-28DX (Montreal)

@Agro

That is a real mind-bogglling image - congratulation!

Holger,

I very much appreciate your comment.

Sorry to be so late with my response but time difference with Sydney and workloads do not allow me to log on too often.

Cheers

Agro

By the way, I must say that without this Forum I would be nowhere in my Leica experience

ALex, can you comment on the Mamyia ZD? How you like it? what you feel about IQ compared to M8,... Thanks a lot, TOm

here is a brief answer. I am very happy with the MZD when using it at 100 iso and when I am not stressed to shoot more than 10-15 shots at a time.

compared to the Hasselblad kameras it takes alot longer to buffer the photos if you need to take more photos in a row. It has a lot of "pixel noise" when used at over 200 iso.

the screen on the back of the camera is terrible. but at least I can check that everything works.

I chose not to buy a digital hasselblad because of the cost.

not as flexible or quick as the hasseblad or the Canon 5D. but still a good medium format digital camera. I would rent it for a few shoots to try out before I buy.

I have not used the back on an "old analogue" mamaiya.

I have started using the M8 with the 35/1.4 to get a "medium format" feel with the short depth of field. I do a lot of "environmental portraits" (people in places) with that setup. I use the Mamaiya less and less.

I have in my Leica "Outdoor" combination bag (which I strongly recommend):

M 8 (one of the first 1500)

24/2.8 asph

28/2.0 asph

35/1.4 asph

50/1.0

50/2.0 (1913-1983)

75/1.4

90/2.8 TE.

I traded my 28/2.8 (III) (1913-1983) and a 35/2.0 (IV) (1913-1983) into the 28/2.0 asph, and have had no regrets at all, since the modern lenses have much greater sharpness and much better colour rendition. This applies also to my 50/2.0 (1913-1983) and my 90/2.8 TE, so I will soon trade these into a 50/1.4 asph and, eventually, also a 75/2.0 asph.

The 50/1.0 and 75/1.4 lenses are the worlds best lenses for portraits and for available light, so they can be used and should always be kept alongside other 50 and 75 mm lenses.

I doubt that 90 mm lenses have any reasonable use on the M 8. I prefer the R-system for those lengths. My R-system with the DMR, however, suffers from weight and clumpsiness, compared with my M-system. So I hope for an early upgrade to a R 10, so that I can use wih that my R-lenses 19/2.8, 24/2.8, 28/2.8, 35/1.4, 50/1.4, 80/1.4 and the 2.0 apo-extender. I will for the R 10 also buy a 100/2.8 apo and a 180/2.8 apo together with the 1.4 apo-extender. Then I will then have all I can dream of for the R-system.

It seems that my 24/2.8 asph has rarely left my M 8 body since I got that lens, so that lens must be my mostly used M-lens. I do not think, however, that I can name any of the lenses as my favourite. They all have their strengths and weaknesses and, accordingly, their particular use. Perhaps the reason for keeping my 24/2.8 so much on the camera is an expression of its being the best allrounder in the M-system.

A&A Sebastio with M8 w 28mm CV, a 50mm Summilux 1.4 (old)

Otherwise, lens cloth, Minolta meter, spare battery and cards, ziplock bags.

Everything else has stayed quietly away in the studio cabine and I don'y really miss any of it. Almost exclusively B&W and reveling in the freedom.

have fun,

Butch

  • Leica M8 with Poon magnifier

(...)

Dante,

The poon magnifier: I guess you're referring to the one available from Hong Kong. It seems to be flatter than the Leica original, which I found cumbersome to use with glasses. Can you confirm this or does it just seem that way?

Best,

Norbert

Hi. Returned home just now and is checking my backlog. This is why I come in late.

Most of my current gear is pre-M8. Here it is (out of the wheelbarrow):

M4-P, M8

CV 15 w/Milich adapters front and rear (coded) + Leica 21mm and CV 15mm finders.

Elmarit 21mm pre-Asph, being coded, + Leica 28mm finder.

Olympus OM 16mm Semi-Fisheye w/Novoflex adapter – a fun lens.

Summicron 28mm ASPH, coded.

Summicron 35mm, 1983, not coded (works fine).

Summilux 35mm ASPH, coded.

Elmar 50mm collapsible (1960) for M4 only, of course,

Summilux 50mm ASPH, non-coded.

CV 75, non-coded.

Elmarit 90mm, 1958 vintage; lovely lens.

Tele-Elmarit 90mm, 2nd version; my M4 standby.

Summicron 90mm pre-asph; where the devil is my 55mm filter?

Tele-Elmar 135mm, for the M4 only of course.

Elmarit 135mm with goggles, fine on the M8.

Telyt-V 200mm, used (along with 90mm Elmarit) on Viso II or III.

My most used bag is a small zoom-SLR-style Rowi Globetrotter with one M camera with lens, and one extra lens in the bottom compartment. With the M8 lenses are usually 28 'cron and either the 50 'lux or the CV 75.

Sometimes I use a little Tamrac Velocity 2 which takes camera+lens, and two extra lenses. The third lens is often the 15 or 21. The bag also holds:

Swing-out pola filter, small Metz 34 CS-2 Digital flash w/ Nikon CV17 cord OR Leica Ultravid 8x20 binoculars, spare card, battery, cleaning cloth, cable release, odds & ends and a Gossen Sixtomat Digital. My Billinghams is for 'expotitions' when I have to carry some non-photographic survival gear.

But often I put the M8 in the neoprene eveready case with the lovely old 35 Summicron and that is all! This is HCB style photography and what I love best.

Small bag: M8

15CV, 21CV, 35 Cron asph, 50 Cron, 90 Cron asph

Big bag includes small bag and: M3 SS, 28 Summaron, DR 50 Cron, 65 Elmar, 135 Elmarit, 135 Tele Elmar, 280 Telyt, 65mm Elmar

The big bag is not carried much but I am still inclined to carry the M3, partially out of a feeling of guilt for somewhat forsaking it.

For me the whole point of the M8 was to keep my existing M lenses in use, so my net change in lenses since Nov. has been pretty minimal: added 28 Elmarit ASPH (- 30%), 50 'cron, in exchange for 28 Elmarit v3, 35 'cron pre-ASPH (actually I disposed of the 35 well in advance of the M8 arrival, in anticipation - not a "normal" field-of-view guy).

Holdover lenses, all performing exquisitely: 15 CV; Canadian 21 - 90 f/2.8 'thin' - 90 f/2; Wetzlar 135 Tele-Elmar

Other stuff added: IR filters for everything (bunch o' 39s, 1-60, 1-55); 28 Leitz Canada viewfinder; Milich codable LTM adapter.

And 2 M8s, one chrome and one black.

I tend to carry the 90 f/2 - 21 f/2.8 pair when I need the big apertures, and the 15/28/50/90TE combo when I want compactness.

I did do a bit of experimenting in the middle months: 28/75 'crons, 50 1.4 ASPH. Ultimately, while they are superb lenses, they just didn't quite fit what I shoot, how I shoot, and the strengths and weaknesses of the M8 - at least for the moment.

Stuff not in use and stashed in the closet: M4-2 film body, 15mm CV finder.

Bag: when using one body, "Nat Geo" compact bag; when carrying both bodies, my 25-year-old Atan black satchel (kind of like a smaller, lighter version of the Domke satchels) for which I have never found a decent substitute. I do have a Domke F6 "little bit smaller" bag that I would use if I absotively, posolutely had to carry everything at once - which is mostly never.

Okay, now you have me curious. In what way do the 28 Cron Asph , 50 Lux Asph and Apo 75 Cron Asph not fit the M8? These are some of the best lenses in the lineup, and the M8 extracts more of their sharpness than a film M.

I have just completed a move of homes (losing the internet for a few weeks) so I am very late to this party but here goes.

I must admit to being a Leica glassoholic and this list I guess proves it:

15CV with JM adapters at both ends

21 elmarit (Chrome Silver)

24 elmarit (Chrome Silver), 24 elmarit (Black)

28 Cron (Black)

35 Cron (Chrome Silver)

35 Lux (Chrome Silver)

50 Cron (Chrome Silver)

50 Lux (Chrome Silver)

75 Cron (Black)

90 Cron APO/Asph (Chrome Silver)

90 Macro Elmar (Chrome Silver)

M8 Silver and M8 Black

Inbound 75 Lux and WATE with Frankenfinder

For Sale 24 elmarit (Black); 35 cron (Chrome Silver); 50 cron (chrome silver)

Using the A&A Oskar Bag which I love. Worked great on the recent Porsche/Leica trip

Oh well, I might as well join the game <grin>

Standard bag is a leather Billingham Hadley containing...

15mm Voigtlander

24mm Elmarit

25mm Voiglander with IR filter - not that we've had too much IR sunlight this summer

35mm ASPH Summicron

75mm Summicron

This covers just about everything I want to shoot, if I wanted to cut it down further I'd just take the 35mm and 75mm lenses. I also have 28mm Voiglander, 50mm Summicron, Nocti and a 90mm Voiglander, but don't carry them by default. There's also a Tri-Elmar that's currently in Solms and is used if I want a very lightweight kit.

If I'm away from home and driving I'll also have a MacBook, if not an Epson P-2000.
