35mmview Posted June 6, 2018 Share #1 Posted June 6, 2018 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi, Just wanted to say hello and introduce myself. My name is Dave and I have just taken the plunge into the wonderful world of Leica. For too long I have lusted after one of these handsome beasts. Well I lust no more as my Nikon D4 has gone and a shiny(ish) M-P Type 240 has replaced it. The D4 with a lens attached was such an unwieldy beast! I don't have a lens as yet but hope to get a 35mm F1.4 or the F2 version. Anyone recommend either one over the other? The 50mm focal length is not for me although I would consider a 28mm instead of the 35mm. I just can't make my mind up! The idea is to only have one lens and permanently glue it to the front of the camera. The more I have the more indecision is created and I crave nay demand a simple life Thanks, Dave. jaapv Posted June 6, 2018 Share #2 Posted June 6, 2018 No difference in quality, just in speed. And in size and price.
Luke_Miller Posted June 6, 2018 Share #3 Posted June 6, 2018 I find I prefer the smaller lenses to minimize viewfinder blockage. I get great results with my 35mm Summicron and my CV 35mm f2.5 Color Skopar
35mmview Posted June 7, 2018 Author Share #4 Posted June 7, 2018 I find I prefer the smaller lenses to minimize viewfinder blockage. I get great results with my 35mm Summicron and my CV 35mm f2.5 Color Skopar I never thought of viewfinder interference. Thanks. I already have a couple of Nikon fit Voigtlanders. Certainly a more cost effective solution.
mikeamosau Posted June 7, 2018 Share #5 Posted June 7, 2018 Welcome and congrats!! Both are great, but I love the 35mm 1.4, by far my most used lens. If of any interest, I wrote a review with lots of sample images at: https://photobasecamp.com/review-leica-35mm-summilux-asph-fle/ Look forward to seeing your photos soon! Welcome to the forum Dave. I am sure it will be an exciting journey. The idea of one lens is great and it does simplify photography. But be forewarned that temptation of other excellent lenses are strong and over time you may give in. I do have other lenses too but most of the times I do go out with only one (and max two) lenses. Whatever fancies that day but I stick to 28mm more often since that is the way I see the world and 35mm crop is not too far away. You should chose the FL you like and there is nothing wrong with it. In terms of speed, elmarits and elmars are overlooked but they are excellent and with M240's useable ISO3200 (I routinely use it if necessary) they are not that restrictive. If I have to start all over then I will start with slower lenses than jumping on luxes. I also use M240, as a general platform for many cheap (but excellent) legacy lenses (using appropriate adapters and EVF) just for fun and get excellent results without breaking the bank. Heck, I can even borrow my friend's latest Nikon lenses and shoot on M240. All this adds to the *fun* in photography (why else will you shoot unless you are a pro) Edited June 7, 2018 by jmahto
sblutter Posted June 8, 2018 Share #7 Posted June 8, 2018 Advertisement (gone after registration) +1 for CV 35mm f2.5 Color Skopar A great starter 35 - with added bonus of light weight & very sharp. Mine gets more use than a 1.4 Summi - for weight & little need for 1.4 on a wide To build your lens collection, don't turn up your nose on used / Ebay
lct Posted June 8, 2018 Share #8 Posted June 8, 2018 [...] I don't have a lens as yet but hope to get a 35mm F1.4 or the F2 version. Anyone recommend either one over the other? [...] Depends if you intend to shoot in low light with your M-P 240. If you do, better get a 35/1.4 as the camera is too noisy at 6400 iso and at 3200 iso, f/2 won't be fast enough in low light if you shoot moving subjects.
35mmview Posted June 8, 2018 Author Share #9 Posted June 8, 2018 Thanks everyone for the welcome and the kind advice. It looks like the 35mm 1.4 will be the one for me. Just have to find one at a reasonable used price and I’m off and running. Watch this space
