lukeadair Posted June 2, 2018 Share #1 Posted June 2, 2018 Advertisement (gone after registration) Sadly, because of advancing age and accompanying vision problems that make focusing just too difficult, I've decided to sell my M10. My question for the group is, do you think it would be wise to list it on the Forum Classifieds, or just go ahead and put it on eBay? Listing it here appeals to me, because I think I may find a buyer who is more inclined to both understand and enjoy the camera. On the other hand, eBay provides a vastly larger audience, of course. In any event, I'll be taking pictures of the camera tomorrow (as well as three lenses -- 35 Cron, 50 Rit, 75 Lux) and will post them somewhere! Thanks in advance for any advice. Advertisement Posted June 2, 2018 Posted June 2, 2018 Hi lukeadair, Take a look here Must Let My M10 Go. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
erl Posted June 2, 2018 Share #2 Posted June 2, 2018 Ebay may be a larger audience, but you only need one buyer. Why not list it here (in the classifieds) and be happy that more likely someone who understands the camera will have it.
jonatdonuts Posted June 2, 2018 Share #3 Posted June 2, 2018 Have you tried using it with an add on diopter? That might help...
Jeff S Posted June 2, 2018 Share #4 Posted June 2, 2018 I agree with testing a diopter, which can be done at a dealer, or for free at most opticians using trial diopters taped over VF. My aging eyes require a +.5 diopter in addition to my glasses, which correct for distance and astigmatism. For selling, another option is to consign your gear to a reputable Leica dealer that will handle all things associated with marketing and listing, plus provide dealer warranty, which can increase the asking price. Popflash, for instance, returns 80% of sale value, and they typically bump up the asking price on their eBay site. Jeff
lukeadair Posted June 2, 2018 Author Share #5 Posted June 2, 2018 Thanks for the diopter suggestions. I have been down that road to no avail. (Vision problem is serious.)
0luke1 Posted June 2, 2018 Share #6 Posted June 2, 2018 I sold off my Nikon equipment (D4 and a dozen lenses) after losing use of my left hand due to stroke. Ebay is expensive (10% commission plus fees), but stuff sells quickly. Fredmiranda is free, but I had to deal with dozens of tire kickers. Advice: If you even think the ebay buyer is a dealer, expect the “there’s a microscopic scratch” email and you’ll either have to pay for return shipping or give the grifter a discount to avoid the hassle. I’m sorry about your vision. I found using liveview and the EVF a useful workaround for one hand and when I use a tripod, I can use the rangefinder. Did you try the EVF? MarkP Posted June 2, 2018 Share #7 Posted June 2, 2018 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) Have you considered keeping the lenses but replacing the M10 with an SL, or using the Visoflex on M10 as Luke suggested. 4pipes Posted June 2, 2018 Share #8 Posted June 2, 2018 I sold all my Nikon gear to KEH Camera. Approximately the same price as EBay after all fees. Easy peasy. No tire kicking.
Bill W Posted June 2, 2018 Share #9 Posted June 2, 2018 I have had mixed results using ebay for expensive items and the fees for the M10 will probably be the max which I think are around $500 plus the PayPal fees. I would try the forum first FWIW. Oh and sorry to hear about your problem. Hope you find another solution to keep shooting.
jonatdonuts Posted June 2, 2018 Share #10 Posted June 2, 2018 That's a shame. I hope you are still able to enjoy photography through the wonders of autofocus. Best regards, Thanks for the diopter suggestions. I have been down that road to no avail. (Vision problem is serious.)
Abram Posted June 2, 2018 Share #11 Posted June 2, 2018 Luke I understand you're sad to let the camera go, but I may have someone local that might be interested in buying your camera (I'm also in your area). I will contact you separately
6bit Posted June 3, 2018 Share #12 Posted June 3, 2018 eBay is a mess with these sort of things. I just went through selling a bunch of nice Canon gear. The people who win the bid then fail to follow through creates a long, sad process. I’m sad for you. I couldn’t imagine to having to part with my Leica gear. Maybe let the body go and use your lenses with a Sony with M lens autofocuser? Best of luck. If you post it somewhere, please post back here.
bocaburger Posted June 4, 2018 Share #13 Posted June 4, 2018 I have had mostly good experiences selling on the bay. I only do auctions though, never BIN, and always state I won't end an auction early to "but it now". I think perhaps scammers are less interested in having to bid on an item. I don't bother with a reserve...people know what things are worth and someone has always bid it up to a fair price. I have found when listing things on forums that my time gets wasted by lowballers. And I like buying from KEH, but my experience in trying to sell to them is they have always lowered the grade of whatever I sent them, and then offer me 50-60% of what they sell it for. I have always done much better on the bay, even taking their fees and PP's fees into account.
derleicaman Posted June 5, 2018 Share #14 Posted June 5, 2018 (edited) I used to sell lots of things on eBay, but no longer do. eBay has changed and not for the better. I can echo all the negatives plus the crazy fees charged. I have had tremendously good experiences on Facebook on Leica Classifieds and the classified ads on Rangefinder forum I have had zero issues with any of my transactions on Facebook RFF costs $7 to run an ad for a month and likewise great results Haven't tried here yet as I could not figure out the listing process I would certainly trust Tamarkin or Popflash Had a similar issue with KEH described above years ago so I would not recommend selling to them Edited June 5, 2018 by derleicaman
lukeadair Posted June 5, 2018 Author Share #15 Posted June 5, 2018 bocaburger and derleicaman . . . my local authorized Leica dealer used to pay 70% of his retail price for used gear, but has now reduced that to 65%. KEH, B&H, Adorama all pay even less than that, sometimes a ridiculous amount less. I certainly agree with you about trusting Tamarkin for a fair offer, but I have had my issues with Popflash in the past and prefer to avoid that. I think what I will wind up doing is just listing the stuff on my own website. I've already created a "Gear For Sale" page there, and am in the process of adding descriptions, photos and prices. When I finish this little project, I'll post the link here. May be a week or so, though, as I am off on a short road trip.
Jeff S Posted June 5, 2018 Share #16 Posted June 5, 2018 (edited) I’ve never had an issue with Popflash on consignments. On the contrary, they’ve been honest, professional and prompt with full payment as committed (currently 80%). LocalHero1953 Posted June 5, 2018 Share #17 Posted June 5, 2018 If I'm selling expensive stuff, I now prefer to sell on commission through a dealer. They are upfront about the price they will sell it for and the discount from that of what you receive - typically 15-20%. Given that they sell with a short warranty and have good online marketing reach, and have to make a profit, I find this a worthwhile option. The downside is that it may take some time to sell and for you to receive your money (my M9 took nearly 6 months, but the dealer warned me that could be the case - the M240 had come out and there were a lot of M9s around). lukeadair Posted June 23, 2018 Author Share #18 Posted June 23, 2018 So I came back here just to say auf Wiedersehen to Leica and to the forum. All of my Leica gear has been sold. And when I started another thread here with a link to my web page where everything for sale was shown and described -- and after first asking if doing that would violate any rules or protocol on the forum -- the forum moderators (I guess) deleted that post after somebody whined about it. That's okay, really. But what galls me is that nobody had the courtesy to simply tell me that the post was being deleted. So, goodbye and good luck to one and all.
