Hey all,

I searched the archives, but didn't find what I wanted.

I have an M240 and a 35 Summilux vers. 2 and a 50mm Summilux pre-ASPH vers. 3, which are both great, but wanted to get more of the modern, clinical look on my soon-to-arrive M246.

I hear the ZM 28 f/2.8 and 35 f/2 Biogon are both stellar, but anything else really cool.

Thanks!

Really cool, I guess, but really expensive is the the 50 Apo Summicron-M. The only reason I'm keeping it is the M246.

Some of the Zeiss ZM lenses are wonderful with the 246. The C-Sonnar, although it has focus-shift, produces a very nice dreamy bokeh.

The small, light and inexpensive 35/2.8 brings up a technical rendering and exremly high IQ. The 35/1.4 is as fine as the Leica FLE. The Planar 50/2 is a nice standard lens.

All of them have a warm colour rendering, which you won’t like if you are looking for a cool, more technical style.

Easy enough in color, i have a hard time discerning “warm” from “cool” , or “Leica” from “Voigtlander” lenses for that matter in monochrome other than one’s 6-bit coded and the other is not, LOL.

The 50/2 Planar T gives a more modern "clinical" look unlike the Sonnar 1.5 which is still sharp but in a classic way.

The way I tend to think of the Zeiss lenses is that the Sonnar's render a little like the Summilux's and the planar's like the Summicron's, but the one advantage the Leica "cron's have over the Zeiss lenses is less finder blockage, apart from that they're optically almost on par with each other.

Hi everybody, just bought an M240 few months ago and enjoing it with lenses I have from my M6 time, but I am now considering passing  to more modern lenses. Starting from the 50mm I ve read elsewhere different comments regarding the zeiss planar and sonnar, and would like very much to have an advice from the forum here before buying one of these..

Thank you in advance for your time to answer me.

The 50mm Planar is the more modern design - very contrasty and max. opening of f/2.  The Sonnar with f/1.5 upholds the tradition of the classical Zeiss design from the 1930s - rather soft fully opened with impressive bokeh. Though it shows considerable focus shift, i.e. at f/1.5 the exact focus will be different from f/2.8 or f/4, which is not easy to handle with an optical viewfinder. So the Planar will be the better lens for every day use, the Sonnar for a special impession when you use it fully opened.
